On Thursday, England's modern-day great Joe Root eclipsed Australia's Allan Border to enter the list of top 10 highest run-scorers in Test cricket. The right-handed batter achieved this triumph on day 2 of the 2nd Ashes Test against Australia, scoring 11,178 runs at an average of 50.57 in 132 matches.

Although Root enjoyed stellar success in the first Test at Edgbaston, he endured a failure in the Lord's Test, being dismissed for ten by Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc.

The highest run scorer in Tests is the India Great Sachin Tendulkar. In 200 tests, he has amassed 15291 runs at a sublime average of 53.78, making it invincible with 51 centuries and 68 fifties in the format.

He is pursued by the former Australian captain Ricky Ponting with 13,378 runs in 168 Tests, South Africa's Jacques Kallis with 13,289 runs in 166 matches, India's Rahul Dravid with 13,288 runs in 164 matches and England's Alastair Cook with 12,472 runs in 161 Tests.

Regarding the Lord's Test, the game hangs in balance at the moment, with England still trailing Australia's first innings total by 126 runs. As of writing, the hosts are 290 for five, with Jonny Bairsow and Harry Brook batting on 7* and 49*, respectively.
