Shreyas Iyer Jeopardises Test Comeback; Gets Out For Single-Digit In IND-A Vs AUS-A 1st Test

Shreyas Iyer's Test comeback chances received a massive jolt, with the batter getting dismissed cheaply in India-A's ongoing unofficial Test against their Australian counterparts. Coming at number five, Iyer managed only eight runs before Corey Rocchiccioli got his prized scalp on day three of the Test match.

Iyer Fails To Capitalise On Red-Ball Opportunity Yet Again

Hailed for his scintillating stroke play, Shreyas Iyer has been a vital member of India's ODI setup. He played a key role in powering India to the 2023 World Cup final before helping the Men in Blue script an emphatic triumph in the Champions Trophy this year.

However, despite performing admirably in ODIs, Iyer has yet to cement his place on the Test side. His persistent lean patch that saw him score 187 runs across 12 innings at a mediocre average of 17 led to his ouster from the Indian Test setup.

In such a scenario, the Duleep Trophy as well as the unofficial Test series against Australia gave Iyer a golden opportunity to get his rhythm back and present a strong case for his inclusion in the Indian squad for the upcoming Test series against West Indies.

But he had another disappointing outing after failing to prove his mettle in the Duleep Trophy, where he scored just 37 runs across both innings against Central Zone. Overall, Iyer has managed only 45 runs in three red-ball innings since the beginning of the current domestic season.

A tough road ahead for Shreyas Iyer

The only positive sign for Iyer is that he will get at most three more innings against Australia-A to convince the selectors about his Test prowess. With the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar and Narayan Jagadeesan breathing down his neck by piling up runs efficiently, the time is indeed running out for Iyer at the moment.
