Indian speedster Mohammed Shami became a Sri Lankan cricketer for a while owing to a broadcasting goof-up during their recent World Cup 2023 clash in Mumbai. While displaying Sri Lanka’s playing XI earlier in the Indian innings, Shami’s face was demonstrated over Dushmantha Chameera’s name, before the network eventually rectified their error.

Moreover, Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav was also enlisted in the Sri Lankan line-up on the same display, taking over veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews.

Indian speedster Mohammed Shami, after jolting New Zealand and defending champions England in successive games, retained his place in the playing XI for team’s crucial World Cup 2023 fixture against Sri Lanka. Suryakumar Yadav, despite his uneven run in the tournament, also found a spot in the playing XI for the high-profile showdown.

As it turned out, both Shami and Suryakumar became Sri Lankan cricketers for a while, at least digitally, owing to a hilarious display goof-up from World Cup 2023 broadcasters Star Sports.

Interestingly, the two cricketers retained their playing roles even in the rival camp, as Shami had taken over his counterpart Dushmantha Chameera, while Suryakumar Yadav replaced Sri Lanka’s middle-order batter Mathews.

On the cricketing front, Team India amassed 357-8 from their 50 overs owing to sublime 80-plus knocks from Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Iyer in particular provided the death-overs surge through his 56-ball 82, while Kohli and Gill revitalized the Indian innings following the early dismissal of in-form opener and captain Rohit Sharma.

Sri Lanka’s new-ball paceman Dilshan Madushanka unfurled the spell of the innings as he claimed key top-order wickets to finish with a five-fer, the first of his ODI career.
