South Africa will host Australia in the second T20I of their three-match series in Kingsmead on September 1. The match marks a must-win one for the Proteas in their attempt of enforcing a series-decider this Sunday at the same venue.

SA vs AUS: Team Previews

South Africa

South Africa slumped to a huge defeat, their biggest in T20Is, in the opening match of their three-match home series against Australia. Fielding with debutants Dewald Brevis and Gerald Coetzee, the Proteas were battered out of the game in the first innings itself, courtesy of Australian big-hitting duo of Mitchell Marsh and Tim David.

Notably, South Africa also lost their preceding T20I series at home to West Indies earlier this year. Their form in the game’s shortest form continues to ring alarm bells in their roadmap for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Australia

A depleted Australian side, under Mitchell Marsh, hammered hosts South Africa by 111 runs. Batting first, they piled their record total (226-6) against the Proteas before dusting them out for just 115. Debutants Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson, Tanveer Sangha all found time to shine in their maiden T20I outings to cap a complete team effort.

Skipper Marsh himself bludgeoned a 49-ball 92* while Tim David clubbed a 28-ball 64* to orchestrate the record Australian total. Remarkably, the ongoing series is Australia’s first T20I assignment since their disappointing campaign at the 2022 T20 World Cup at home.

SA vs AUS: Kingsmead Pitch Report

The surface at Kingsmead in Durban will assist the pacers, offering decent seam movement early on with the new ball. Moreover, fast bowlers have claimed 79 percent of the wickets at the venue in the last 10 T20 matches. Batters, as seen in the series opener, can also thrive in these conditions after overcoming the new-ball threat. The average first innings total at Kingsmead has been 149 off late.
