RCB Lose Big Three Inside Powerplay As Gujarat Builds Pressure
It indeed wasn't a day to remember for Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women, who were playing against Gujarat Giants Women at their home M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Winning the toss and putting the Bengaluru side into bat, the Royal Challengers lost their first three wickets inside the powerplay, courtesy of highly consistent bowling from the Giants.
The first one to depart was opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who was trapped in front of stumps by Deandra Dottin, while the big Aussie all-rounder Ellyse Perry was stumped for a duck by her compatriot Ashleigh Gardner, whereas skipper Mandhana was dismissed for 10, as RCB were reduced to 25 for 3.
They needed some resurgence, which was provided by middle-order batters, Ragavi Bisht and Kanika Ahuja, who batted decently for a 48-run partnership off 37 deliveries, taking RCB to 73 for 4 when Bisht had to depart after being involved in the run-out in the 12th over.
Giants Restrict Bengaluru To 125 After Bowlers Continue Stranglehold
Soon after Bisht left for 22, Ahuja followed her as spinner Tanuja Kanwar caught her off her own bowling for 33, as RCB were in deep trouble with five down for 78. Hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh was also sent packing for just nine by the end of the 16th over, as RCB were reduced to six down for 99.
Royal Challengers were in desperate need of some big blows in the last four overs but couldn't find them as Georgia Wareham and Kim Garth, 20* and 14, respectively, were only able to take them to 125 for seven by the end of 20 overs.
The Giants' bowlers were absolutely spot on, with Deandra Dottin and Tanuja Kanwar picking up two apiece, while skipper Gardner and Gautam had one wicket each after their names.
Gujarat Lose Two Early But Skipper Gardner Comes To The Rescue
In pursuit of defending 126, the RCB side started decently, as they dismissed both Giants openers Beth Mooney and Dayalan Hemalatha in 6.2 overs, reducing the opposition to 32/2.
Then came skipper Ashleigh Gardner, who took the responsibility into her own hands to lead her side. The skipper batted fluently and confidently against the Bengaluru bowlers, punishing them with her powerful shots.
Giants lost their third wicket in the form of Harleen Deol in the 10th over, but Gardner continued her attack with regular boundaries all around the ground. Meanwhile, Renuka Thakur bowled a decent spell of 2 for 24 in her four overs, which was completed by the end of the seventh as RCB went all in right from the beginning to defend 126.
Skipper Gardner's Fifty Leads Gujarat To Second Win In WPL 2025
Ultimately, it all proved too easy for Ashleigh Gardner’s Gujarat Giants, as they won the game easily in 16.3 overs, chasing the score with six wickets in hand. Gardner went on to score 58 off 31 deliveries, as she was dismissed right in the second last over of their innings by Georgia Wareham, while Phoebe Litchfield played a supporting role, scoring 30* off 21 deliveries.
