KKR’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy took a leaf out of Gautam Gambhir’s book of tactics to set an attacking field against MS Dhoni. During the KKR vs CSK matchup in IPL 2025, Varun put a short leg fielder to tackle Dhoni.

Reeling from four back-to-back losses, CSK hosted KKR in the 25th match of the IPL 2025 season. While they batted first this time around, their fortune didn't change a bit. Instead, Chennai hit a new low.

Wickets fell in clusters as CSK lost 8 wickets with just 75 runs on the board. As new captain MS Dhoni came to the team’s rescue, KKR opted for an attacking field.

KKR Set Attacking Field For MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni came in to bat at no.9 for CSK and KKR wanted to neutralise the threat as soon as possible. Hence, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy went with an attacking field placement. He requested a short-leg fielder and his captain Ajinkya Rahane adhered to it. 

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Kolkata has challenged Dhoni. Back in 2016, Gautam Gambhir placed a hyper-aggressive field for Dhoni. He called up two slips, a silly point, and a short leg right as the former India skipper walked in at 74 for 4.

While leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was bowling on a turning track, Gambhir’s decision to crowd Dhoni with close-in fielders felt more psychological than tactical. Now, it seems KKR has not forgotten Gambhir’s learning.

That being said, CSK created a big mess for themselves. Dhoni also couldn’t trouble the scoreboard, walking back on 1 of 4 runs. They got a below par total and are staring at another humiliating defeat.
