Joe Root, for the last 3 years has been unstoppable in the Test format, slamming 19 centuries and breaking all records with utmost ease. On Sunday, December 8, he attained another scintillating milestone with his 36th Test ton, this time against a helpless New Zealand side.
After a rather lacklustre showing in the first innings of the second Test, Root came back to his usual best as he made the best out of the batting situation and slammed his 36th century to equal India's Rahul Dravid in terms of most centuries scored in Test cricket.
In reply to England's 280 in the first innings, New Zealand got bundled out for a mere 125, and the visiting batters took full advantage of the situation as almost all the batters piled on runs for fun, but the standout performer was Root, who continues his dream Test run after a rare poor showing in the Pakistan tour.
His century was a masterclass of skill and temperament as the former skipper reached his ton with 11 fours, and had a strike-rate of 80.
Most centuries in Tests
Player | Matches | Runs | Average | 100s |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sachin Tendulkar | 200 | 15921 | 53.78 | 51 |
Jacques Kallis | 166 | 13289 | 55.37 | 45 |
Ricky Ponting | 168 | 13378 | 51.85 | 41 |
Kumar Sangakkara | 134 | 12400 | 57.40 | 38 |
Joe Root | 151 | 12886 | 50.93 | 36* |
Joe Root, after equalling Dravid's record of most Test tons has set his eyes set on Sachin Tendulkar's elusive record. The Indian maestro has the most centuries in Tests (51), and Root is only 15 away from that feat.
Plus, England play a lot of Test matches and it will allow Root to get more closer to the Test record of Tendulkar.
England closer to series win
New Zealand 583 runs to level the series, but the hosts have crumbled under pressure as they are 9 down inside 254 runs and are on the verge of a series defeat. The visitors won the first Test by 8 wickets and they'll be eyeing a memorable Test series win after a disaster-class in Pakistan.
