South Africa charted 399 runs against England as they aim to rebound from their shock Netherlands defeat in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. Turning up at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium in match number 20 of the competition, Proteas’ number five Heinrich Klaasen blasted 109 from just 67 balls while Marco Jansen went berserk at the death with his 42-ball 75*.

Interestingly, South Africa’s 399-run effort also established a huge national record for them against one of their oldest white-ball rivals.

Klaasen, Jansen power SA to national record

After being put into bat first by England in a crucial World Cup 2023 standoff, South African opener Reeza Hendricks overcame Quinton de Kock’s early dismissal through his 85-run knock at the top. Number three Rassie van der Dussen and interim skipper Aiden Markram also unleashed notable contributions in the middle overs, and set up a platform for Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen to go berserk at the death.

The two cricketers added 151 runs for the sixth wicket from just 76 balls as South Africa finished their 50 overs at a staggering 399-7.

Remarkably, South Africa’s latest effort in Mumbai now marks their highest-ever ODI total against England, surpassing their 14-year-old record of 354 in Cape Town. Markram and co. also equaled England’s 399-run effort from 2016 to register joint highest ODI total from all South Africa vs England matches played out thus far. Here is a look at South Africa’s five highest ODI totals against England:
