Indian spinners Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin feasted over New Zealand batters on the opening day of the second Test of their three-match series at Pune’s MCA Stadium on October 24. Here’s the timeline of how IND vs NZ panned out in Pune:
IND vs NZ Highlights: Ravi Ashwin Takes Top Three; Conway Makes 76
New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway negotiated India’s opening pace attack before the former was trapped in front by senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the eighth over of the innings. Following Latham’s exit for 15, number three batter Will Young formed forces with Conway at 32-1 to take New Zealand past the opening hour of play without further casualty.
Young bode his time to score 18 runs from 45 balls before he was caught behind by Rishabh Pant off Ashwin at 76-2. Unbeaten Conway marched on to list his 11th Test fifty and second in succession, taking his team to the brink of the 150-run mark in the process.
Having pumped out 76 runs with 11 boundaries off 141 deliveries, the left-hander became Ashwin’s victim of the day at 138-3.
IND vs NZ Highlights: Washington Sundar Celebrates Test Return With Seven-Fer
Batting at number four, Rachin Ravindra hauled 65 runs and forged crafty fifty-plus stands with Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell to take New Zealand at the edge of the 200-run mark before Tea break. Looking all settled to notch up his second successive Test century, the batting all-rounder was knocked over by Washington Sundar with an absolute ripper.
Sundar, playing his first Test match in more than three-and-a-half years, also snared the remaining six New Zealand batters to claim sensational and career-best best figures of 7-59 in his 23-over spell. The 25-year-old dismissed the likes of Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, a well-set Mitchell Santner and the entirety of New Zealand’s tail to fold up the visitors for just 259 in less than 80 overs.
IND vs NZ Highlights: India Lose Rohit Sharma Late In The Day
Left to negotiate the remaining 11 overs of the day, Team India lost captain and legendary opener Rohit Sharma for a nine-ball duck to senior New Zealand paceman Tim Southee, in just the third over of the innings.
Following the early setback, young guns Yashasvi Jaiswal (6*) and Shubman Gill (10*) saw off New Zealand’s opening threat to take India to 16-1 in 11 overs by stumps on Day 1. The two cricketers will resume the innings on Day 2 as Team India finds itself another 243 runs away from the visitors.
