On the back of a disciplined bowling performance followed by some brutal hitting with the bat, Australia defeated West Indies by 3 wickets in the fifth T20I on Tuesday, sealing the five-match T20I series 5-0. It marked Australia's first 5-0 win in T20I cricket and only the second instance for a full member nation.
Here, we take a look at the highlights of the 5th T20I between West Indies and Australia at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts.
Aussies Strike Early, Hetmyer’s Counter Pushes Windies to 170
Asked to bat first, West Indies had a shaky start as Shai Hope fell early in the powerplay, followed by the rest of the top order. Ben Dwarshuis and Aaron Hardie struck key wickets to leave them three down quickly. Sherfane Rutherford counterattacked but was dismissed by Glenn Maxwell just after the powerplay.
At 64/4, Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder joined hands for a crucial 47-run partnership, keeping the scoreboard moving with regular big hits. Holder eventually fell, and Nathan Ellis dismissed Romario Shepherd before he could make an impact. Hetmyer continued the charge, brought up his fifty, and pushed the total beyond 150.
West Indies were eventually bowled out for 170, with Hetmyer top-scoring with a brisk 52 off 31 balls. With the ball, Dwarshuis was the standout for Australia with three wickets under his belt. Ellis impressed in the second half with two key strikes, ensuring West Indies could not build momentum in the final overs.
Relentless Hitting Powers Australia Past West Indies
In pursuit of a 171-run target, Australian batters came out firing, with Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, and Tim David all starting strong. However, none of them could make it a big score as West Indies struck back, reducing them to 67/4 by the end of the powerplay. Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph led the charge with two wickets each.
However, the visitors never looked under pressure as Mitchell Owen and Cameron Green launched a brutal counterattack, smashing over 50 runs in just three overs after the powerplay. West Indies, searching for answers, turned to Akeal Hosein, who provided the breakthrough by dismissing Owen after a fiery 37 off just 17 balls.
Green, who was the hero for Australia in the last encounter, scored 32 off 18 but could not finish the job this time. West Indies did took some wickets towards the end, with Hosein taking a 3-fer, but it was too late. Aaron Hardie ( 28 off 25) held firm at one end, guiding the visitors home with a composed finish as Australia won by 3 wickets with 3 overs remaining.
