Brisbane Heat justified its defending champions tag by overcoming Adelaide Strikers in a stiff last-ball thriller in match nine of the BBL 2024-25 season at The Gabba. Chasing a stiff target, Heat’s middle-order batters Matt Renshaw and Nathan McSweeney racked up blazing half-centuries for the hosts.

Here’s the timeline of how Heat vs Strikers panned out at Brisbane:

Heat vs Strikers Highlights: Bartlett And Whitney Suppress Strikers’ Powerplay Ambition

Brisbane Heat’s new ball quick Xavier Bartlett struck in his first over by getting rid of Adelaide Strikers opener D'Arcy Short for just a single. Captain Matthew Short (13 off 12) also failed to lead his side to recovery as he was holed out at mid-on by Bartlett off fellow Heat fast bowler Tom Whitney in the fourth over of the match.

Chris Lynn (24 off 21) and wicketkeeper-batter Ollie Pope (34 off 29) rectified Strikers’ faltering start to some extent until both were done-in by Will Prestwidge (2-16) as the defending champions slipped to 89-4 in under 13 overs.

Heat vs Strikers Highlights: Jamie Overton Rescues Heat With Late Blitz

Adelaide Strikers’ English import Jamie Overton pumped out 45 runs from just 24 deliveries in the backend of the innings with three boundaries and three sixes. Overton’s late blitz turbo-charged the Strikers’ total to a competitive 174-6 from 20 overs.

James Bazley at number seven also chipped in with a swift 23 from 11 balls along the way until he was knocked over by Paul Walter at the death.

Alex Ross made 20 with three boundaries but the BBL veteran failed to rage on as a mix-up with Overton led to his downfall in the 16th over of the innings.

Heat vs Strikers Highlights: Thornton Gets The New Ball Swinging In Heat Chase

Adelaide Strikers fast bowler Henry Thornton knocked over both Brisbane Heat openers, including captain Colin Munro, within just the first two overs of his new ball spell.

At 19-2, number four batter Matt Renshaw brought Heat’s chase back on track with intense power-hitting, all inside the first 10 overs. Renshaw clattered four boundaries and three huge sixes and brought up his fifty from just 24 balls. Upon reaching 54 off 27, the 28-year-old had his near-perfect rhythm hampered by a tossed-up delivery from Ollie Pope.

Seizing the newfound momentum, Pope also trapped Max Bryant for just three a couple of overs later as the defending champions crashed to 95-4 in 11.2 overs.

Heat vs Strikers Highlights: McSweeney Aces Stiff Chase With Classy 78*

Australian Test star Nathan McSweeney paced his innings to perfection as Brisbane Heat pulled off a remarkable chase off the final ball of the match.

Batting at number three, McSweeney cracked an unbeaten 78 from just 49 balls with 10 regal boundaries and a couple of match-defining maximums to steer his team past the finish line alongside tailender Mitchell Swepson.

The outcome helped the Brisbane Heat record its second win in succession in the BBL 2024-25 season.
