Hazlewood bags another wicket. Rashid sends the ball high in the air only to get caught by the Aussie gloveman. Australia win by 33 runs.

Woakes is out!

He had no option but to swing the bat. The ball was there to be hit. But Woakes could not time it well enough and his catch gets taken near the boundary.

Rashid swings his bat at a waist-height no-ball and it's a maximum. Thriller in the offing?

Woakes his fighting hard. He has just hammered a six but it's enough only to add artificial excitement.

This is England's best performance while chasing in the ongoing World Cup. This in itself tells you how low standards they have set in this tournament.

Moeen holes out!!!

England's little hopes go with Moeen who slog sweeps the ball to the hands of  David Warner who was stationed at the deep mid-wicket. Do I even have to tell who dismissed him? Yes, it's him again. Need another hint? Ok, let's stop. It's Zampa. He becomes the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup.

Moeen is still going strong, keeping England in this chase. But it's just too hard to do it all alone.

Cummins sinks England's hopes!!!

Australia are back in the commanding position. Whatever threat they had of losing this gone as Livingstone too is shown the way back to the dressing room by Cummins.

Zampa dismisses the big fish, or should I say shark!

Stokes cannot believe it. He is disgusted with himself. He swept the ball straight to the hands of the short fine leg fielder. Zampa turns the match again in Australia's corner.

Australia are under the pump. Moeen and Stokes are going all guns blazing. And if the partnership continues at this pace for five more overs, it will be anybody's game.

He dispatches the ball in the stands. What a way to bring up his half-century. 

It's been difficult to fathom England's approach with the bat today. The required rate is around eight and the batters are still not showing any signs of urgency. Have they accepted the defeat already?

It's down to the Miracle Man again if England are to win this game. Stokes and only Stokes will be able to pull this off. But it's just too tough. I can't see that happening.

Zampa gets better of Buttler!!!

Buttler poor tournament continues. There was a clear match-up between him and Zampa. The leg-spinner wins the battle again. He tosses the ball up. The Englishman targets the long-off boundary but fails to generate the power in the shot as the bat turned in his hand. He eventually gets caught out.

Captain Cummins delivers!!!

Australia needed a wicket and it's Pat Cummins who has answered to the team's demands. Malan tries to be ultra aggressive, sends the ball high in the air but lacks elevation and gets caught at deep square leg.

50 FOR MALAN!

He has not done exceedingly in this tournament but despite his struggles, he has found a way to be England's best batter. It's good to see him show some responsibility.

Stokes flexes his muscles and powers the ball down the ground for a six. England are on the charge now. 

Malan initiates the attack and scores two boundaries in the same over on Stoinis' bowling. It has happened for the first time in this innings that two boundaries have come in a single over.

The required rate is creeping up. Both the batters are well set but are hesitating from playing big shots. 

STOP THE PRESS. Stokes has just hit a boundary. What a beautiful stroke it was. He showed the ball full face of the bat and nails a straight drive. Give us more of that, Stokesy.

Nothing much is happening. Stokes is busy with his blockathon. Malan is showing intent but he too is failing to put the ball in the gaps.

Stokes is batting on seven runs after facing 28 deliveries. Will we finally see the Big Ben leave his imprints in the 2023 World Cup or it will end up being a horrible knock?

Malan swivels the ball to the leg side and fetches a maximum to end the batting powerplay with England at 38/2.

Only two overs in the batting powerplay remain. One of Malan and Ben Stokes should look to attack a bit. Otherwise, England would fall too behind.

England batters have started just like how they have in most of their other matches in this World Cup. The defending champions have been pale shadow of themselves and it's hard to see them play in this 

Australia make up for the DRS mistake!!!

Australia have now reviewed for a caught-behind. There is definitely a sound. Yes, the Aussies have got it right. Root is a goner. Starc strikes again.

Close, very close. Root opened opened the face of his bat at the last moment as the ball goes past just a bit wide of the second slip for a boundary.

Joe Root had hit driven the ball straight to Stoinis at cover but the Aussie made a mess of the catch. Root survives as England breathe easy.

Australia burn a review!

Australia have taken a review for LBW. It seems to be missing the leg stump. Let's wait for the ball tracking. Yes, the ball is not hitting the wickets and the on-field decision stands.

Bairstow's horrid run continues!!!

Laughable dismissal really. It was a loosener from Starc. Runs were there for the taking. But what did Bairstow do? He just tickled it down to Aussie wicket-keeper who completed the formalities to send the Englishman packing for a golden duck.

Will England batters show up for good?

If it were the England of two months ago, you probably would have bet all your money on them going on to chase this. But, considering how they have performed lately, it should be a tall oder for them.

England would feel that they could have restricted Australia a bit more in the final overs. Five wickets fell in the last 10. But this includes Zampa's 29-run cameo. If not for him, Australia would have ended under par.

It's a wicket!!!

The ball finally lands in the gloves of the wicket-keeper. Zampa's fine knock comes to an end as Chris Woakes bags his third wicket of the match.

Zampa is scoring some useful runs. England could have restricted them to a par total but Zampa's ongoing cameo has given the Aussie a few extra runs to play with.

Zampa gets bounced out but the ball lands in the vacant position on the ground. Luck is running Australia's way. And as I type this, a top-edge has flew over Jos Buttler for a four.

Short ball ploy works again!!!

Wood takes down another batter with a short delivery. Cummins goes for a big shot but top-edges the ball to the man at short mid-wicket.

Livingstone roars as Stoinis perishes!!!

The Aussie was tearing apart Livingstone but holed out at deep mid-wicket in the end as he went for another aerial shot after scoring a six and a four in the previous two deliveries prior to the wicket.

Green's dismissal has put the match in balance. Stoinis remains Australia's last hope if they want to end up anywhere around 300.

Green castled!!!

Willey might have announced his international retirement but he is making sure that he does not let go Australia easily before that. Green tries to paddle sweep the ball but it manages to beat his bat and knocks the leg stick.

An onslaught awaits!

Green and Stoinis have carefully negated the waiting period. The hard time is behind them and now they can try to be a bit more aggressive as Australia eye 300-plus total.

A confusion between the batters for a run but all's well that ends well. The partnership is still on.

Green and Stoinis are batting sensibly. They know they do not have any batter to follow and cannot go all-out. They are scoring a boundary here and there but singles are taking care of the scoring rate mostly at the moment.

How much more runs should Australia look to score from here? Maybe 290. Their last recognised batting pair is at the crease. They have Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc waiting for their turns. But still if they lose one of Marcus Stoinis or Green, it will be very hard for them to recover from that setback.

Wood earns the wicket!!!

Labuschagne has been adjudged LBW. He immediately reviews it. No bat is involved and the ball tracking is all red too. Wood gets his reward as set Labuschagne takes an exit from the ground.

Wood is troubling Green. He is trying to shake him up with bouncers and almost succeeded there but the ball again fell in the gap.

What happened there?

Cameron Green threw a kitchen sink at it. Mark Wood's pace rattled him as his bat also slipped off his hands. Meanwhile, the ball lobbed off in the air. Two fielders and the bowler converged in but it landed in no man's land.

Labuschagne withstood the fall of wickets and is standing stall in the middle of a predicament, just like how Australia want him to. He need to make it big for Australia to set a competitive total on this track.

Inglis' short stay at the crease ends!!!

It's that man again. Rashid is spinning the web around Australia. Inglis is more to be blamed for his dismissal. There was nothing great about the delivery. He played a reverse sweep but instead hitting it in the gap, he found the backward point fielder.

Rashid strikes as Smith walks back!

How good has Rashid been for England in this World Cup. He has again provided England a wicket at a crucial time. Smith played the cut shot. The ball got big on him as it ballooned to the short cover fielder who dived to his front to take the catch.

100 UP FOR AUSTRALIA!

The partnership between Smith and Labuschagne has started to flourish. Good show of batting by the duo. They have put into their habit to continue rotating the strike and bad deliveries are not being spared either. Time tough ahead for England...

Smith and Labuschagne have built a solid partnership to help Australia recover from 38/2. Buttler has handed to ball to Adil Rashid in a desperate search for breakthrough.

Lid been kept on the run-flow

England are looking strong in the clash. Don't scratch your eyes already. Yup, their bowling unit has been bowling to the plans as Australia have literally struggled to get going in Ahmedabad thus far. Steve Smith has looked solidly but Labuschagne has had problems in rotating the strike. The next 7-10 overs would be important for Australia.

End of Powerplay

A decent start for both teams in the first 10 overs. Australia stand on 48/2 with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease. Chris Woakes has been the wrecker in chief for England as he has sent both Aussie openers back to the dugout. Marnus has struggled to find runs in the early part of his innings while Smith holds fort at the other end. A crucial partnership for Australia to define their innings going forward, if England manage to break this partnership early then they will have a firm upper hand heading into the next phase of this game.

After Head's wicket, England tested the Aussie bowlers, especially DW, with their sharp bowling. The southpaw survived a couple of loud shouts, but Chris Woakes had another plans. Short ball over the fourth stump line. Warner got a top edge as the ball skied up to fall into the safe hands of David Willey. The Aussie openers have been sent back to the hut by Woakes!!

Shaky start start for the Aussies as Chris Woakes removes Travis Head for 11. Nips away from the batter who looked to dab late. The ball got hit at the outside half of the blade and went towards Root at first slip. Root is one of the best in the cordon and helps Woakes with the first wicket.

This will be the third match of the World Cup 2023 at this venue. England played here against New Zealand in the curtain raiser, in which they put up 282/9, but got belted by the Kiwis. In the other fixture, Pakistan faced the Netherlands, in which the former successfully defended 286, with all 20 wickets falling across both innings.

Out of the 11 pitches that are there at Narendra Modi Stadium, five are made of black soil, whereas the other five are mixtures of three types of soil. The other one is a mixture of two soils. If any of the black soil surfaces take center stage during this match, expect the fast bowlers to generate more bounce and be effective.

However, at the same time, the ball will come nicely onto the bat, and thus, a high-scoring encounter could be on the cards only if England play smartly instead of recklessly.

On the other hand, if the contest takes place on any of the red soil pitches, expect spinners to make more impact than the pacers.
Nevertheless, considering both sides' prowess, fans should expect a thrilling high-scoring contest between two of the giants of world cricket.

ENG vs AUS: Team Preview 

Australia: Their journey in the World Cup got off to a rocky start with consecutive losses to India and South Africa. However, they have rebounded with four consecutive wins against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. A victory over England would almost guarantee their place in the semi-finals.

Australia will be without all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh for this match. Marsh has returned home for personal reasons, while Maxwell is sidelined due to a concussion. Opener Travis Head's return from injury is a substantial boost for Australia, and he made an immediate impact by scoring a century in the match against New Zealand. 

Marsh's absence may place more responsibility on all-rounders Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, particularly in the bowling department. In Marsh's absence, Steve Smith is expected to reclaim the number three slot, even though his recent form is a concern. The form of Mitchell Starc, who went wicketless in the last game against New Zealand, is also a worry.

The middle order has been a source of disappointment in recent games, and the experienced trio of Joe Root, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes need to contribute big runs.
