For his outstanding contribution with the bat, the Australian skipper and opener, Mitchell Marsh, was awarded the man of the match, where he scored a brilliant 46 not out off 52 deliveries with two boundaries and three maximums, batting at a strike rate of 88.46 in tough conditions, as he took Australia home comfortably in the end.

Australia won the toss and put India into bat in overcast conditions in the first ODI at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Batting first, had a poor start, losing the opener, Rohit Sharma, for just eight, while Virat Kohli could not get a single run after registering an eight-ball duck. Following this, the third player to be dismissed, skipper Shubman Gill, scored 10 as India didn't get any momentum in their innings.

Shreyas Iyer departed for 11 as rain continued to intervene multiple times inside the first seventeen overs, and four rain breaks were in place, which further broke the momentum of the Indian side. After being 45 for 4 in 13.2 overs when Shreyas Iyer departed, Axar Patel walked into the centre and scored a fighting 31 off 30 deliveries. At the same time, KL Rahul's middle-overs boost helped India gain some leverage.

Rahul scored 38 off 31 deliveries with two boundaries and sixes. In the final over of the game, which was reduced to 26 overs aside after multiple rain delays, Nitish Reddy hit two sixes as he ended up not out for 19, taking India's score to 136 after 26 overs for the loss of nine wickets.

Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Owen, and Matthew Kuhnemann grabbed two wickets each as India couldn't get an above-par total at this bouncy pitch. India put 136 on the board, and the DLS method was applied, where Australia's target was reduced to 131 in 26 overs.

Opener Mitchell Marsh hit a magnificent 46 not out as Travis Head and Matthew Short could only get eight each after their innings. With the help of Josh Philippe's 37 and Matthew Renshaw's 21*, Australia aced the chase with seven wickets in hand in just 21.1 overs. Indian bowlers weren't at their best with their lines and lengths, as they went for runs, where they couldn't contain the Australian batters in the end, as Australia won by seven wickets after the DLS method was applied.
