Cricketers are used to rewriting records on the field, but this time, they have done it in the startup world. Indian cricketer KL Rahul and England Test captain Ben Stokes have joined hands to invest in The Medical Travel Company, a healthcare startup that just raised $4.5 million in seed funding.
The idea behind the startup
Founded by Ankit Mehrotra and Sahil Jain, the brains behind the restaurant-tech platform Dineout, the UK- and India-based company aims to give a complete makeover to medical tourism, a space that has long been messy, confusing and filled with hidden costs.
For millions of people in the UK, long waiting lists for elective procedures have become a painful reality. According to reports, nearly 7.7 million people are waiting for treatment. The Medical Travel Company wants to offer an alternative by connecting UK patients with accredited hospitals and internationally trained doctors in India at a fraction of the cost.
Who is backing the vision?
The $4.5 million round was led by Nexus Venture Partners, with participation from Kriscore Capital and the athlete-led collective 4CAST, co-founded by Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and KL Rahul.
Also joining the cap table were prominent angel investors like Sriharsha Majety (Swiggy), Abhishek Goyal (Tracxn), Dr. Ritesh Malik (Innov8), Manish Vij (Smile Group) and Arjun Vaidya (V3 Ventures).
Funds like 1947 Rise Fund and Peercheque also took part, which makes it a truly global and cross-industry collaboration.
KL Rahul and Ben Stokes’ vision
For both Rahul and stokes, the move is a step towards combining sport, innovation and social impact.
KL Rahul said:
“It is fantastic to announce this investment between 4CAST and The Medical Travel Company; we feel it is a perfect combination. Having grown up in India, I've witnessed the country's development across many industries over the years. We are hugely excited about working alongside Ankit, Sahil and their team to help create new pathways for patients while ensuring proper support throughout the entire process.”
Ben Stokes, echoing that enthusiasm, added:
“We are delighted to announce our investment in The Medical Travel Company. When we first started 4CAST in 2021, we wanted our collective of athletes to be able to partner with innovative businesses and great founders. We feel we have done so here and we are excited to back Ankit and Sahil and look forward to supporting their journey ahead with TMTC.”
What the roadmap looks like
The funds will be used to bolster the digital patient management system, expand partnerships with hospitals in India and scale operations across the UK. Over the next few years, the founders plan to take their model global, expanding into the US, Canada, Australia and Europe.
