On Wednesday, Indian cricket fans were taken by surprise as India legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. The news came after the Brisbane Test draw, marking the end of a remarkable 14-year career.
As soon as Ashwin’s retirement was announced, tributes poured in from all corners of the cricketing world. Players, fans, and celebrities alike came forward to honor the off-spinner’s incredible achievements. Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, wife of cricketer Virat Kohli, was among the many who paid tribute.
Anushka shared a touching video of Ashwin from his retirement announcement press conference, captioning it with the words, “A Lasting Legacy.”
Actor Ranveer Singh also joined in, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram, applauding Ashwin’s stellar career.
Ashwin’s Exceptional Career
Ashwin’s career has been nothing short of legendary. With 537 Test wickets, he stands as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, behind only Anil Kumble, who claimed 619 wickets. Not just a bowler, Ashwin proved his mettle as an all-rounder, scoring six centuries in Test cricket and earning the title of the top-ranked Test all-rounder in ICC rankings at one point.
In white-ball cricket, Ashwin also left his mark, taking 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is.
Ashwin Leads WTC Wicket-taking Chart
Ashwin holds the distinction of being the first bowler to claim 100 wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently, he leads the WTC’s wicket-taking charts with 195 dismissals in 41 matches, closely followed by Australia’s Nathan Lyon with 190 wickets.
