The 2023 ODI World Cup, set to be played in October and November this year, will be hosted by India for the fourth time in history. However, the tournament marks the first time ever to be entirely organised in India, having previously hosted the quadrennial event on three occasions.

Unfortunately for the Indian team, hosting rights also comes with an additional baggage of extra pressure and much expectations from the home crowd. Rohit Sharma and co. will enter the event as one of the top contenders to lift the trophy, even though the ‘Men in Blue’ have not won a single ICC title in more than 10 years.

Former cricketer and World Cup legend Yuvraj Singh believes India’s trophy drought might well continue for another year, as he recently highlighted some of the main concerns haunting the current team.

Yuvraj Singh wants team to solve middle-order woes

The Indian team management is yet to finalise their combination for the 2023 World Cup. Moreover, the team’s middle-order is marred with either injuries or a slump in form. Senior players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant are not yet fully recovered from their respective injuries, while T20 zealot Suryakumar Yadav has not been able to replicate his success in ODIs.

India’s 2011 World Cup alumnus Yuvraj Singh has said that the current team needs to fix its middle-order issues. While appearing on the YouTube channel Cricket Basu, the celebrated all-rounder said:

“I can be a patriot and say 'India will win because I am an Indian.' But I see a lot of concerns in the Indian middle order because of injuries. If those concerns are not resolved, we will struggle, especially in pressure games. Don't experiment in pressure games. The skill work to bat in the middle order is very different from that of an opener. Is there anybody there (in the team management) who is working around the guys that will be playing in the middle order?”

In the meantime, Rohit Sharma-led Indian team is gearing up for the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The ‘Men in Blue’ will also face Australia in a three-match ODI series. The two assignments will serve as a testing ground for the Indian team for the all-important World Cup at home.
