While the world is buzzing with development around IPL 2025, there is a major update from the Women's Premier League (WPL), as November 7 is reported to be the deadline for all five franchises to submit their retention list to the BCCI.
According to reports from FemaleCricket, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Giants will have to submit the retentions by November 7.
WPL Retention Extended To November 7
It is worth noting that earlier, the deadline for all teams was October 15, but it was extended to November 7. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions. Each team can have a squad of 18 members with six overseas players. The BCCI will conduct a mini-auction based on the retention, but there is no clarity on when the auction will be held.
Unlike IPL, the auction purse for the third season is INR 15 crores, having increased from INR 12 crores in season one and INR 13.5 crores last season.
Major Change In Window For WPL
One more big change is that the Future Tour Program (FTP) will now include a window for franchise leagues. The Women’s Premier League (WPL), India’s marquee T20 tournament will begin in January from 2026 onwards instead of the usual February scheduling. That, in return, will push the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) to February 2026.
The first two seasons of the WPL have been a major success and the third one is likely to surpass the viewership records of first two seasons. Further, the BCCI is waiting for the league to grow a bit more to add new teams. However, for WPL 3, five teams only will take part in the mega-event.
