Virat Kohli was at his surgical best for Team India in their tense run-chase pursuit against New Zealand at the 2023 World Cup. Arriving to the crease at 71-1, the cricketer tactically kept the scoreboard ticking along as he went on to slap his fourth fifty-plus score of the tournament.

Kohli was eventually dismissed at the brink of victory for 95, thus allowing fellow well-set batter Ravindra Jadeja to land the knockout punch to New Zealand with 12 balls to spare.

While it was Mohammed Shami who walked away with a ‘Player of the Match’ award, Kohli ended up attaining a huge batting record through the course of his Dharamsala epic.

Virat Kohli topples Gayle, Rohit Sharma for big record

Virat Kohli punched out a rebellious 95 against New Zealand to lead India to a four-wicket table-topping win in Dharamsala. The batting veteran paced his innings to perfection, as he started out cautiously before unleashing a barrage of boundaries aided by calculated running between the wickets.

Through the course of his latest match-winning effort, Virat Kohli became the first player in history to score over 3,000 runs in ICC white-ball events, featuring 50-overs World Cup, T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy.

He went past previous record-holder Chris Gayle, who scored 2,942 runs in ICC tournaments during his playing days. Sri Lankan duo Kumar Sangakkara (2,876 runs) and Mahela Jayawardene (2,858 runs) are the next biggest run-aggregators on the elite list, and they are followed by Kohli’s current Indian teammate Rohit Sharma (2,733 runs) and batting great Sachin Tendulkar (2,719 runs).

While Virat Kohli fell just short of overcoming the run-chase off his own bat, the cricketer’s track record in unbeaten chases is staggering. So far in his glittering ODI profile, the right-hander has remained unbeaten in Indian run-chases on 33 occasions.

In a remarkable feat, the cricketer has guided Team India past the finishing line in 32 of those instances, with just one of them resulting in an Indian defeat.

Virat Kohli along with the rest of his Indian teammates will now face England in their subsequent World Cup 2023 challenge on October 29. Their much-awaited bout against the defending champions will be played out at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
