Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana is set to miss his side’s upcoming World Cup 2023 clash against the Netherlands as he will not be available for selection. The youngster sustained a shoulder injury earlier in the tournament, following which he was taken for scans.

The subsequent results forced the fast bowler out of contention for Sri Lanka’s all-important game against Australia, and his injury-prone absence will keep him out of the Netherlands’ affair as well.

Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2023 match-up against the Netherlands marks a must-win one for them, considering they are yet to register their opening points in the tournament.

Pathirana likely to be ruled out from World Cup 2023

Matheesha Pathirana sustained a shoulder injury during Sri Lanka’s high-scoring World Cup 2023 match against Pakistan in Hyderabad earlier this month. Scans revealed that the cricketer will not attain full fitness in time for his side’s subsequent outing against Australia.

As it turned out, Pathirana is set to miss the Netherlands fixture as well as he will not be available for selection. Moreover, the youngster might well be ruled out of the entire tournament, if certain recent reports are to be believed.

The Sri Lankan team, already ravaged by injuries and big defeats, lost out regular skipper Dasun Shanaka from the rest of the competition earlier this week.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have already announced Angelo Matthews and Dushmantha Chameera as team’s travelling reserves. The duo joined the Sri Lankan group on Friday, October 20, i.e., a day prior to team’s must-win match against Netherlands.

Sri Lanka will be facing Netherlands on October 21. Their much-awaited contest will be played out at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
