The cases of slow over-rate have been increasing in international cricket. Another instance occurred when West Indies Women were fined for a slow over-rate during the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup match against India in Hamilton on Friday (11 March). The Windies were fined 40% of their fees for the offence.
According to the Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, all the players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side falls short of in the stipulated time.
West Indies were two over short of the required quota; hence a fine of 40 percent was imposed on the Caribean side by Shandre Fritz, a member of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. However, on-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Paul Wilson, third umpire Ahmed Shah Pakteen, and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge leveled the charges on West Indies.
After winning Hamilton's toss against India, the Windies were sent in to bowl first. They failed to finish their 50 overs in time and were fined as a result. West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor accepted the sanction after the game, and there was no need for a formal hearing.
India had a great game as they scored a mammoth total of 317-8 at the end of their 50 overs. Smriti Mandana and Harmanpreet Kaur starred with the bat, and both the batters scored incredible hundreds. The change in approach from the Indian batters paid off in this game.
The West Indies Women got off to a great start as they scored 100 runs for no loss in the first 12 overs. However, a significant collapse followed, which saw them getting bowled out for 162 runs.
India won the match by a margin of 155 runs to go at the top of the points table.
