Swashbuckling West Indies opener Lendl Simmons has called time on his international career. Simmons has become the second Caribbean cricketer to walk into the sunset, with wicketkeeper-batter Denesh Ramdin also announcing his international retirement.
The development was confirmed by Simmons' CPL franchise, Trinbago Knight Riders.
Simmons, who is the nephew of former West Indies all-rounder Phil Simmons, burst on the international scene in 2006 following impressive performances in domestic cricket for T&T.
The right-handed batter made his debut in an ODI against Pakistan in late 2006, but mediocre performances led to his axing. However, he worked his way back in 2009 following a truckload of runs in domestic cricket. But, Simmons failed to replicate similar feats at the Test level.
His struggles in Test cricket aside, Simmons continued to remain an integral part of the Windies white-ball set-up.
He was one of the few shining lights for the West Indies in their abysmal 2015 World Cup campaign. But, inexplicably, he was one of the first casualties after the fall-out.
He continued to plunder attacks in franchise leagues all over the world. His greatest moment in international cricket will always be smashing India out of their own party at the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final with a brutal 51-ball 82*.
He was also a part of the side that featured in the 2021 edition. But, much like his teammates, Simmons struggled to adjust to the slow and sluggish wickets of the UAE.
Overall, Lendl represented the Caribbean islands in 8 Tests, 68 ODIs and 68 T20Is, scoring a total of 3763 runs with 2 hundreds.
