We are professional enough to move on: Ramesh Powar

Indian women’s team head coach Ramesh Powar has said that he and the skipper Mithali Raj wants to work towards the betterment of the team. “I would like to stop the speculation (on) what is happening. We interacted well, otherwise I wouldn’t have come into the women’s cricket,’ Powar said.

“I don’t think we are going to go back on small things where we are professional enough to move on and everyone should move on,” he added.

The Indian team will be playing a one-off Test against England during their tour to UK and the former off-spinner has said that it is a good opportunity for everyone to take women’s cricket to another level.

“This is a great opportunity for me, Mithali, for the whole group, to take women’s cricket to another level, where the BCCI is supporting us.”

Mithali herself emphasised on focusing more on the game and leaving the past behind. “Can we move on from that? Because it has been three years, we are in 2021, we should be looking forward to many more series and if we need to get behind the past,” the captain said.

Apart from the one-off Test, India will also play a three-match ODI series and as many T20Is.

BCCI still hopeful of hosting ICC World T20 in India

Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given up hopes on hosting the Indian Premier League in India and has all but sealed UAE as its preferred location, the fate of the ICC World T20 still hangs in the balance. The BCCI top brass is in not ready to give up claims of hosting the marquee event in India and hence seeking extra time from ICC before choosing UAE once again. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has said Khaleej Times that India is still the preferred location for the BCCI and will give up on the idea only in the next two months if the Covid-19 situation does not improve in the country. “That issue also has been deliberated. Our first choice is India. So we will be seeking some time from the ICC, a month or so, to decide about it. If towards the end of June or maybe, the first week of July, the situation is not good there (India), then obviously it will come to the UAE. If the situation improves (in India) and we are able to host it, then we will be hosting there,” Shukla told Khaleej Times. The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League was abruptly postponed midway through the season when the teams started reporting Covid-19 cases in their camps.

Missing Ben Stokes to injury, England name Stuart Broad as vice-captain of Test squad

England have named Stuart Broad the vice-captain of the Test side for the series against New Zealand starting June 02 at Lord’s. Stuart Broad will replace Ben Stokes, who has been ruled out of action after fracturing his hand in the 14th edition of the IPL earlier this tear, as Joe Root’s deputy in the longest format. England have included a lot of young and different faces in the squad for the series in order to strengthen their squad leading up to the Ashes scheduled for the end of this year. The move to include new faces in the squad could also be seen as a move to give rest to players coming from IPL 2021 and prolonged period in quarantine and biosecure bubble. England would be desperate to start on a winning note following the series loss against India earlier this year.

Mumbai Cricket Association appoints Amol Muzumdar as coach for 2021-22 season

The Mumbai Cricket Association has appointed Amol Muzumdar as the coach of the side for the 2021-22 domestic season. Muzumdar’s appointment was based on the recommendations made by MCA's Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) comprising Jatin Paranjpe (chairman), Nilesh Kulkarni and Vinod Kambli. The MCA had interviewed nine candidates including former India opener Wasim Jaffer, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Sairaj Bahutule, Sulakshan Kulkarni, Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal and Vinod Raghvan apart from Muzumdar. The former cricketer had come close to getting appointed last year but a dispute with the CIC headed by Lalchand Rajput saw Ramesh Powar being selected for the job. But Powar’s appointment as the head coach of the Indian women’s team left the place vacant and was taken up by Muzumdar. Muzumdar has led Mumbai in the past and was capped 171 times at the First-Class level and accumulated over 11000 runs in a career that spanned between 1993 and 2013 while playing 113 List A matches notching up over 3000 runs. He has had coaching experience in the past as he has coached Rajasthan Royals in previous editions of the IPL, has been a batting coach with the NCA and the South African team.

Shafali Verma continues to be at helm in ICC Rankings for women's in T20Is

India women’s team batter Shafali Verma has held the number one spot in the ICC T20I rankings for women while Scotland’s Kathryn Bryce has made it into the top 10 for the first time. Verma has 776 points to her name while Australia’s Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning are at number two and third spot respectively. The right-handed batter has been capped 22 times in T20Is for India scoring 617 runs at an average of 29.4 and a strike-rate of over 148. Apart from Verma, there are a couple of more Indian players in the top 10 list. Opener Smriti Mandhana is at number four position with 693 points while Jemimah Rodriques is at nine with 640 points. Sophie Eccelstone is at the top of the table in the bowling rankings while India’s Deepti Sharma is at number 6 and Radha Yadav at number 7 respectively. In the rankings for all-rounders, India have Deepti Sharma in the list who is at number five with 343 points. The Indian women’s team will fly to the UK on June 2 to play the one-off Test against England in Bristol which will be followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is. The Indian team will be playing their first-ever Test in nearly eight years time.
