Watson makes controversial claims about Finch, his spot in Australian setup

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson believes that Australia's limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch's spot is in danger if he doesn't regain his form by the time of the T20 World Cup 2022.

Speaking on the 'Grade Cricketer' Podcast, the current Delhi Capitals' assistant coach opined that Finch is not batting at his best and needs to work on his technique and mindset.

"Unfortunately, right now, the way he's batting and what I've seen during this IPL, he's batting nowhere near his best," Shane Watson told the Grade Cricketer.

"Whatever is going on, the things he's working on with his technique and mindset, it's changed a lot from when he's been at his best," he added.

The T20 World Cup 2022 will be staged in Australia later this year, and Watson asserted that if the T20 World Cup-winning captain is not scoring runs, he should not be picked for the World Cup squad.

"I believe if he's not scoring runs in the lead up to the T20 World Cup, and it's along similar lines to what we saw here for KKR, you can't pick him," Watson said.

"At the moment, he's so far out of touch, no matter how good your captaincy skills are, if he continues to bat the way he is, it would be a big liability, especially as an opener," he added.

Finch has been struggling a lot since last year. Although Finch led Australia to win the T20 World Cup last year, the skipper had a forgettable tournament with the bat. In seven games, he scored 135 runs at a mere average of 19.28 and a strike rate of 116.37.

The KKR opener made his last appearance in the ongoing IPL 2022 against Lucknow in this edition of the Indian Premier League, where he could score only 86 runs in five innings with the bat at an average of 17.2
