West Indies women defeated England women by just seven runs to claim a sensational win in the ongoing ICC’s Women’s Cricket World Cup.
The defending champions England were chasing down 226 runs and with Kate Cross (27) and Sophie Ecclestone (33*) in the middle when they were on the verge of winning the game. However, some good spells from Stafanie Taylor, Shamilia Connell, and Anisa Mohammed helped West Indies win the match by a close margin.
Meanwhile, some sensational fielding by the Windies were on the display in the match as well. The first innings of the match saw England dropping as many as seven chances, while West Indies looked determined in the second half of play.
Of all, Deandra Dottin was class apart on the field. She took a one-handed screamer to dismiss her opposite number, Lauren Winfield-Hill.
The Women in Maroon star was fielding at the backward point when Winfield-Hill threw the kitchen sink in her direction. It seemed like the ball would only stop after crashing beyond the boundary fence; but then Dottin dived to her left, leapt high, and took a stunner off Shamilia Connell.
It was in fact the first wicket for Cornwell as she ended up picking 3 for 38 today. As a result, the Windies initiated a collapse which helped them clinch a famous win over the reigning champion in the showpiece tournament.
Earlier in the match, West Indies scored 225 for the loss of six wickets. Deandra Dottin (31), Hayley Matthews (45), Shemaine Campbelle (66), and Chedean Nation (49*) were the major contributors.
Interestingly, one of the many missed catches by England included a drop by Winfield-Hill on the first ball of the match that gave Dottin a life.
