Young and prolific Dewald Brevis was once again in his elements on Wednesday (April 13) night as he smashed a breathtaking 25-ball 49 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Chasing 200 to win, Mumbai Indians lost their opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan cheaply when Brevis joined another young lad in Tilak Varma in the middle.
It took the South African prodigy eight balls to score his first run but when he did got off the mark, he proceeded to unleash hell on the Punjab bowlers, especially Rahul Chahar, who bore the maximum brunt.
Punjab’s leg-spinner came into the attack in the ninth over and was immediately greeted with a disdainful thump for a boundary down the ground by Brevis.
The swashbuckler was just getting warmed up. On the next delivery, Chahar bowled a floated delivery and Brevis nonchalantly smoked it over long-on for a six.
The 19-year-old went one step ahead on the next delivery as he went down on one knee and clobbered Chahar for another monstrous six over wide long-on.
Flummoxed by the onslaught, Chahar decided to bowl a seam-up delivery but even that didn't work. Brevis rocked back on his backfoot and dismissed it out of sight with another six over deep mid-wicket.

The best of the lot came on the last delivery as Brevis brought out his 'no look shot' to hammer his fourth consecutive six. The right-hander smashed 28 runs in a space of 5 deliveries to turn the game on its head.
Baby AB's onslaught was finally ended by Odean Smith on 49 when he mistimed an attempted pull shot straight to Arshdeep Singh, who made no mistake at deep square leg.
He could have become the youngest non-Indian to rack up his maiden IPL 50. Nevertheless, his onslaught and the whirlwind 84-run-stand with Varma completely changed the complexion of the game.
At the time of writing, Mumbai were 171/5 in 18 overs, needing another 28 runs to claim their maiden win in IPL 2022.
