Many reliable sources, including Saif Ahmed, believe Wanindu Hasaranga won't play the Asia Cup 2023 for Sri Lanka. The 26-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL), and is expected to miss Asia's biggest tournament.

In LPL 2023, Hasaranga was the highest run scorer (279 runs at an average of 34.87) as well as the highest wicket-taker (19 wickets at 10.73). It is no wonder he finished the competition as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) due to his stupendous overall performance for B-Love Kandy, who ended up winning the title.

No Wanindu Hasaranga in Asia Cup 2023

Recently, Hasaranga announced his retirement from Test cricket., Since he wanted to focus on the limited-overs format, the recent development appears to be very disappointing for him.

Hasaranga was the second-highest wicket-taker in Asia Cup 2022, having scalped nine wickets in six matches at an average of 18.89. In all, he has scalped 67 wickets in 48 ODIs, averaging 28.77, and also made 832 runs in the format.

On the basis of his impressive overall numbers, Hasaranga is ranked eighth in the world in the latest ICC rankings for all-rounders. The Sri Lankan bowler currently holds the 31st spot among ODI bowlers, but his outstanding performance in the shortest format of the game has helped him to become the third-best bowler in T20Is.
