Aiden Markram bludgeoned 106 scorching runs from just 54 balls to orchestrate a big South African win over Sri Lanka in their opening match of the 2023 World Cup. Arriving to the crease following centuries from Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, the cricketer unleashed his own thunderous ton, which also marked the fastest-ever hundred in ODI World Cup history.

Just a day after Aiden Markram’s World Cup 2023 blinder, an old tweet from Virat Kohli in praise of the Proteas batter went viral across social media. The post dates back to March 24, 2018, when Markram was playing a Test match Australia in Cape Town.

An old praise from Virat Kohli goes viral

Aiden Markram launched three sixes and 14 boundaries against Sri Lanka, and his 54-ball 106 set up South Africa’s colossal 428-5, a record World Cup total, upfront. The Sri Lankan batters fought back rebelliously in their run-chase, but sparkling half-centuries from Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka held little weight to Markram’s rampage from the first innings.

Mere hours after the South African batsman’s thunderous effort in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, an old tweet from senior Indian cricketer Virat Kohli resurfaced on social media. The tweet, dating back to March 2018, reads:

“Aiden Markram is a delight to watch!”

At the time, Virat Kohli had praised Aiden Markram after the South African had slapped a scintillating 84 against Australia in a Test match at Cape Town.

Following Proteas’ huge win over Sri Lanka in their World Cup 2023 opener, they will now face Australia for their subsequent challenge on October 12. The much-awaited contest is slated to be hosted by the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
