South Africa beat Pakistan in the first Test to confirm entry into the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 finals. The Proteas returned to the top of the WTC points table, with India and Australia being frontrunners to secure the second seat.

South Africa has become the first team to secure a place in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final after defeating Pakistan in the first Test at Centurion. This victory elevated the Proteas to a commanding 66.67% points percentage on the standings, making them uncatchable for the other contenders.

Regardless of the outcome of the second Test against Pakistan, South Africa’s points percentage would remain sufficient for qualification. This marks only their second ICC tournament final appearance, the first being the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they narrowly lost to India.

The race for the second finalist is heating up, with Australia, India, and Sri Lanka vying for the spot. While Australia is on top at the moment with 58.89% points percentage, India and Sri Lanka are behind them with 55.88% and 45.45% respectively.

Each team faces unique challenges in their path to the final. India has to win the last two Tests against Australia or else they must Win one and draw one with Sri Lanka also needing to draw at least one Test against Australia.

As far as Australia is concerned, a 2-1 or 3-1 series victory against India would do the job. Another scenario is that they draw the Border-Gavaskar series and win at least one Test against Sri Lanka.

Lastly, Sri Lanka has to pray that the India vs Australia series ends 1-1 and they must beat Australia 2-0 to meet South Africa in the WTC 2025 finals at Lords Cricket Ground.

India’s WTC dream threatened by possible penalty

Team India’s woes are unlikely to end soon. With the fourth Test MCG hanging in the balance, the team faces serious threat of receiving a penalty for slow over rate. If so happens, ICC will dock points from the WTC table, which will directly hurt India’s chances of WTC final qualification. Things will be more clear and certain as the Boxing Day Test approaches its final day on December 30.
