Understanding Hardik's mindset is not rocket science: Mohammed Shami

Indian seamer Mohammed Shami believes that all-rounder Hardik Pandya has mellowed down since taking over as the captain of Gujarat Titans.

Gujarat has been one of the most consistent teams this IPL season. Having won 9 out of their first 12 games, they have already qualified for the playoffs, and Hardik's leadership has been central to it.

Hardik has nailed the captaincy role to perfection, a typically fiery, aggressive character, believes Shami.

"After he (Hardik) became captain, he has become more normal, his reactions have been tempered (mellowed). I have advised him to control his emotions on the field because the entire world watches cricket," said Shami, as quoted by the Times of India.

"It is very important as a leader to be sensible, understand situations, and he has performed that role to perfection," he added.

Hardik has impressed one and all with his proactiveness in the field and also by the fact that he has always taken it upon himself whenever the team has found itself under pressure.

Shami believes that Hardik's been a glue that has kept the Titans together.

"He has kept the team together. I have witnessed a lot of changes in him as a captain in comparison to a player," he said.

Having played under multiple captains, Shami very well knows that each leader has his style, so it wasn't challenging for him to understand Hardik's approach.

"Every captain has a different temperament. Mahi (MS Dhoni) Bhai was quiet, Virat was aggressive, Rohit leads according to match situations, so understanding Hardik's mindset is not rocket science." added the veteran fast bowler.

As a leader, Hardik has also thrived this season. In 11 games, he has scored 344 runs @ 38.22/131.8 besides taking four wickets.

Hardik and Gujarat will hope that the all-rounder continues his excellent performance as they aim for a title-winning heist in their debut season.

We could've folded, but they really gave us an opportunity: Fleming on CSK's young fast-bowling pair

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been officially knocked out of the race for playoffs of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after being defeated by Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 59th match of the tournament in Mumbai. Put in to bat first, CSK were all out for 97, and MI consumed 14.5 overs to chase down the total with five wickets in hand. This edition of IPL will be the first occasion where neither of the two most successful clubs in the tournament's history qualified for the playoffs. Unfortunately, neither the CSK batters nor the bowlers could live up to the expectations. Thus, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said they could learn a lot over the next pair of games and plan for the next. "There are some really positive signs. I thought the new ball bowling of Simarjeet and Mukesh was outstanding. We've been developing Mukesh all the way through the season so for him to now feel confident enough to bowl a spell like that... and Simarjeet is only 3-4 games in and he made some good gains," Fleming said after the match. On the other hand, left-armer Mukesh Choudhary has done quite well swinging the new ball and troubling Mumbai batters even with a small target on the board. And this growth has happened because of Dhoni's trust and guidance in him to pick up wickets in the powerplay in the absence of their marquee seamer Deepak Chahar. The Bhilwara-born bowler picked up 11 of his 16 wickets in the powerplay. On Thursday, his spell of 3 for 23 played a crucial role in reducing Mumbai to 33 for four inside the first six overs. "Irrespective of how the wicket is, anything below 130 is very difficult to defend, but still, what I asked the bowlers was to show a lot of character, put the opposition under pressure. Forget about the result, and I feel both the youngsters, both the fast bowlers, they bowled really well," Dhoni commented on Choudhary's super-spell. "We could've folded but they really gave us an opportunity. Both of them bowled well. Mukesh in particular had the ball really swinging well and Simerjeet has got some deceptive pace so we're really positive about that pairing going forward. So that's a positive along with Deepak Chahar to come back into the side, so we've got some good options with the new ball," Fleming concluded. CSK will next play against Gujarat Titans on May 15 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
