TNPL to kick off on 19th July, all matches to be played at the Chepauk

The fifth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), local T20 tournament of Tamil Nadu will kick off on 19th July after the state government gave clearance to host the event.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will host all the matches in the tournament including the final which was confirmed by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) secretary R S Ramasaamy said.

“The Tamil Nadu government formally approved holding the TNPL 2021 tournament on July 1 subject to no spectators and strict Covid protocols. After discussions with all the stakeholders, it was decided to start the 2021 edition of TNPL from July 19 to August 15,” Ramasaamy was quoted as saying in a press release on Wednesday.

All 8 teams in the competition are currently undergoing the mandatory self-isolation before the tournament and will begin practice on 9th July.

“The teams are starting their practice on July 9 at Chepauk after extensive testing, quarantine and following strict bubble rules. The BCCI Anti-corruption team will be in place for the tournament for education and monitoring,” Ramasaamy added.

Players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar, R Sai Kishore, Sandeep Warrier and Varun Chakravarthy won’t be available for the entirety of the tournament owing to national commitments. Meanwhile, wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik who is currently having a commentary stint in the UK is also likely to miss out. The only big name in the tournament will be Vijay Shankar who was part of the Indian World Cup squad in 2019.

Meanwhile, all the 32 matches in the competition will be played at the Cheapuk and the tournament will be telecasted by the Star Sports network including Star Sports Tamil. The doubleheaders in the tournament will be held without any break.

WBBL 7 to kick off three days after AUS W- IND W series

The 7th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League will return in full swing after spending the previous edition in a bio-secure environment in Sydney. The forthcoming tournament will make a return to the “national, festival-based” format and the 59 games will be played across metros and regional areas. The matches will be played across six states. The tournament opener will be played between the Sydney Sixers and the Melbourne Stars at the North Sydney Oval on 14th October with the final slated to be played on 27th November. The tournament will avoid clashing the ODI series between Australia Women and India Women which will conclude on 11th October. The first week will see as many as 9 matches being played in Sydney. The North Sydney Oval and the Blacktown International Sportspark will be the two hosting venues in Sydney. The rest of the tournament will be played across the continent over the course of the next one month. Brisbane Heat will get a new home ground this season with the Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium scheduled to host WBBL matches for the very first time. As many as 47 matches will be telecasted this season which is a record. Cricket Australia is hopeful of conducting the home summer with very little fuss. In a statement, it said that they will continue monitoring the situation as public and player’s health are of the utmost importance. "Like all sporting leagues, we remain conscious of the need to be flexible in response to the challenges of the pandemic. This schedule provides us with a number of options should we need to pivot, and the lessons of WBBL|06 and KFC BBL|10 stand us in good stead should we need to do so,"CA’s General Manager of BBL Alistair Dobson said.

MS Dhoni can continue for another one or two years with CSK: CEO Kasi Viswanathan

CSK's CEO Kasi Viswanathan has cleared the air on MS Dhoni’s future with the franchise and said that the former India skipper will continue playing for them for another one or two years. Viswanathan further added that the wicket-keeper batsman is totally fit and trains a lot. “He can continue for another one or two years with CSK. He is fully fit, trains a lot. Don’t see any reason why he should stop. As far we are concerned, we are happy with what he is doing for CSK. It is not just about his captaincy or the fact that he is the guide or a leader as the most experienced player," he told IANS. "We feel he is still good and brings value as a player to the side. He has been a finisher and is doing that for us." The Chennai franchise has had a pretty successful run under Dhoni’s captaincy after lifting the trophy thrice and looked in good form in the 2021 edition as well it was suspended on May 4 after there were instances of Covid-19 cases within the franchises. The MS Dhoni-led side was placed at number two spot before the tournament was halted. In fact, CSK bowling coach L.Balaji and batting coach Mike Hussey had also tested positive for the disease. The IPL 2021 will now resume in September in the UAE.

Lanka Premier League postponed for an indefinite time: Reports

The second edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) which was scheduled to begin on July 30 has been postponed due to unavailability of foreign recruits, according to an Inside Sports report. “It is unfortunate that the tournament will have to be postponed. Be it Bangladesh, the West Indies, Pakistan or England players – none of them are available at this stage. Right now the new dates for the league are undecided, SLC will check the feasibility in next few weeks”, a SLC official was quoted as saying by the website. The reports further suggested that the postponement of the tournament is not just due to the unavailability of the foreign players but also because of the issues with owners of the franchises. Earlier, as per a Cricbuzz report, Jaffna Stallions became the third franchise to face a termination from the Lanka Premier League after Colombo Kings & Dambulla Vikings. "With the 2nd edition of the LPL set to commence shortly, the exclusive rights holder of the event, the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG) has decided to terminate the ownership of the franchises of Colombo Kings and Dambulla Viiking for the reason of non-compliance," the Lanka board said in a statement earlier. The second edition of the LP was earlier slated to take place in Hambantota from July 30 to August 22.

Request ICC to form an independent Ethics Tribunal to judge my case: Manu Sawhney

The suspended CEO Manu Sawhney on Wednesday had requested the executive board members to "uphold the basic principles of the ICC -- accountability, fairness, and integrity" and asked to appoint an “independent ethics tribunal" for hearing his case. "Clearly, it is inappropriate for the ICC chairman [Greg Barclay] to be responsible for disciplinary action against the ICC CEO in circumstances where the chairman is the person who made the allegations against the CEO," Sawhney wrote in the letter, seen by IANS. "The ICC Code of Ethics (which is expressly referred to in my employment contract) contains a fair and impartial process for dealing with sensitive matters, in the form of an independent Ethics Tribunal, and I request that one to be appointed to hear my case. The chairman should not be allowed to use the terms of my employment contract to circumvent basic procedural fairness, transparency, and accountability," he added. Sawhney who was suspended earlier on March 9 for allegedly being involved in indecent behaviour towards colleagues has made it clear that the ICC as whole has the authority to sack him and not the chairman alone. "Irrespective of the terms of my employment contract, under paragraph 3.3(A) of the ICC Constitution, only the Board has the authority to terminate my employment agreement," he has pointed out.
