TNPL 2022 | Watch: N Jagadeesan’s indecent gesture towards Baba Aprajith after getting ‘Mankaded’

Getting 'Mankaded' in cricket is one of the most infuriating dismissals a batsman can suffer. Last evening's encounter between Nellai Royals Kings and Chepauk Super Gillies in match 1 of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2022 witnessed one such incident, where the batter, after his dismissal, ended up showcasing his displeasure quite openly.

The players involved were Tamil Nadu state teammates Baba Aprajith and N Jagadeesan. Aprajith, in the fourth over of Gillies' innings, knocked over the bails at the non-strikers' end, seeing Jagadeesan way ahead of the popping crease.

Jagadeesan, who also plays for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise, did not respond in kind and showed the middle finger to his Tamil Nadu senior while leaving the field after making a 15-ball 25, with his side chasing 185 to win.

Speaking on Aprajith's dismissal of Jagadeesan, Nellai captain Baba Indrajith said that it is within the guidelines of the game.

"We had spoken previously that nobody should take an advantage. If in the Super Over with one needed, had we taken advantage it would've been unfair. I think Apar [Aparajith] saw Jagadeesan doing it the previous ball and when he went out of his crease, he ran him out. And everyone knows that the rules have changed and it's clearly now mentioned that it's a run-out and not a Mankad so it's within the rules. I think it was a soft indication [on Aparajith not delivering the ball just before he Mankaded Jagadeesan]." he said in the post-match presentation.

The match went into a super over after both teams ended up scoring 184 runs. Needing 10 runs, Indrajith scored the winning run for his side after Gillies scored nine, courtesy of a last-ball six in the super-over from Jagadeesan.

Speaking of 'Mankading', the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), who are custodians of the game, removed this mode of dismissal from Law 41 (Unfair Play) and included it with Law 38 (Runout) under their new code of laws.

Interestingly, these changes will be effective from October 1, 2022.

The last Tamil Nadu player in the eye of the storm was Ravichandran Ashwin, who "mankaded" his current teammate Rajasthan Royals Jos Buttler in the 2019 edition of the IPL while representing the Punjab Kings side.
