Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga created history against South Africa after he became the second bowler to pick up a hat trick in this on-going T20 World Cup.
The spinner had first dismissed Aiden Markram on the last ball of the 15th over and then returned to remove Temba Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius on consecutive balls to achieve the feat.
The right-arm bowler cleaned up Markram for a 20-ball 19 and then invited Bavuma to take the aerial route in the beginning of the 18th over. The right-hander was caught by Nissanka in the deep for 46 off 46 deliveries.
Later, Pretorious who had walked in at number 7 didn’t really have any option except for taking the risks as the asking rate was ever increasing. He too played an aggressive stroke in the air but found the fielder at long on to get dismissed.
The Sri Lankan has now joined Curtis Campher and Brett Lee in the tally of bowlers to pick up a hat trick in the T20 World Cup.
Hasaranga's efforts though went in vain as Sri Lanka failed to defend the target of 143 runs as the Proteas etched a win on the penultimate ball of the match by 4 wickets.
