Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has registered his name for the forthcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) players auction at a base price of USD 50,000. The LPL auction is set to take place on June 14 with the tournament reportedly starting from July 30 and the summit clash to be played on August 20.

This will be the fourth edition of the premier franchise league in Sri Lanka and former all-rounder Irfan Pathan is the only Indian player till date to have taken part in this league. Pathan played for Kandy Tuskers in the inaugural season of the tournament back in the year 2020.

Noticeably, this is the first time the competition will have a players’ auction with all the five franchises participating having a maximum amount of USD 500000 each to spend. According to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, over 500 players have registered for the inaugural LPL players’ auction, including the former star player of Chennai Super Kings, Suresh Raina.

Raina, who announced his retirement from international cricket back in August 2020, has been a very successful international player, having won ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy back in 2013.

The 38-year-old also went on to retire from all forms of cricket in September last year. His last appearance in the Indian Premier League was during CSK’s title winning campaign back in 2021. He is still the highest run-scorer for the Chennai based franchise with 5529 runs, playing a huge role behind them winning four IPL titles and two champions league titles.

Only four players have scored more runs than the former CSK’s number three. However, he was last seen playing cricket in the Legends League Cricket in March earlier this year.

The inclusion of a player like Raina will only increase the value of this very young emerging franchise league. Raina will bring a lot of experience of playing in franchise cricket with himself and is likely to attract a good bid in the LPL auction.
