Abhishek Sharma, representing Punjab in the Ranji Trophy 2024 fixture against Tamil Nadu, etched his name in the record books by launching five sixes in a single over, a feat previously accomplished by just three players in first-class cricket.

In the match taking place at Salem, Tamil Nadu posted 435 runs, dismissed Punjab for 274, and enforced the follow-on with plenty of time to spare. While most teams would have played it safe, Punjab's opener Abhishek Sharma had different plans.

With Prabhsimran Singh falling to Ajith Ram in the fourth over, Abhishek decided to take on Sai Kishore, launching him for an astonishing five sixes in just one over.

Ajith Ram then claimed the wicket of Anmolpreet Singh, and Sai Kishore brought in Pradosh Ranjan Paul, who immediately struck, dismissing Abhishek Sharma for a blistering 16-ball 36, featuring one four and five sixes.

Afterwards, Nehal Wadhera decided to have a go at the Tamil Nadu bowlers, hammering them for 109 runs off just 107 balls. But it didn't make a dent in the result, as Tamil Nadu chased down the target of 71 with ease, winning by eight wickets.

However, Hemang Badani, the former Indian cricketer who currently serves as the fielding coach and head scout at Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, was less than impressed by Abhishek Sharma’s approach and gameplay.

Hemang saw Abhishek Sharma's game as careless, especially since his team aimed to salvage the match. The fielding coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad also stresses the importance of adapting one's play to the situation at hand.

Taking to X, here’s what Hemang Badani wrote:

"And got out for 36 in a 4 day game which his team lost, where they were trying to save the game. One needs to play according to the format and situation.”

Abhishek Sharma's stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023 wasn't up to par, managing just 226 runs in 11 matches, averaging 20.55 with a strike rate of 144. As he prepares for IPL 2024, he will be determined to come back stronger.
