As per the latest reports, former England coach Chris Silverwood is in talks with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to become the head coach of the national men’s team. Rex Clementine, who works for a Sri Lankan newspaper ‘The Island’, has surfaced the news of Silverwood soon becoming the successor of Mickey Arthur via his tweet.
Clementine has tweeted that SLC is in the final stage of negotiations with Silverwood in this regard.
“SLC in final stage negotiations with Chris Silverwood to take over as head coach”, Clementine tweeted. “Silverwood has a reputation for producing results with young teams having won Essex their first county championship in 25 years. He was recently sacked as England head coach after the Ashes”, he further added in his tweet.
Chris Silverwood was recently axed from England’s head coach position by ECB due to continuous poor performance of the English test side in the last year or so.
England had managed to win just two and lose nine tests in the last 15 tests they played during Silverwood’s tenure until the Ashes 2022.
After the horrendous performance of the entire team in the Ashes, the ECB finally decided to bring some reforms in their team structure, which included some changes in the management.
As a result, Silverwood was sacked with immediate effect. Following his axing, the former England coach said that it was an absolute honour for him to serve as England’s head coach. He also thanked the England players and other coaching staff and wished for their success in future.
“It’s been an absolute honour to be England head coach, and I am extremely proud to have worked alongside our players and staff. I want to thank them all for the hard work and commitment they have given during my time in the role, and I wish them all the very best moving forward”, Silverwood said.
He also said that although the last two years weren’t smooth ones for him as England’s coach, he thoroughly enjoyed his time with the team.
“The last two years have been very demanding, but I have really enjoyed my time with the team and working with Rooty and Morgs, and I am very proud of this group considering the challenges. I leave with fond memories, and I am now looking forward to spending some quality time at home with my family and embracing the next chapter”, the journalist further added.
On the other hand, SLC has been searching for their head coach since November 2021, after Mickey Arthur stepped down.
The board allegedly had approached the former Australian coach Justin Langer before Silverwood last month, which turned out to be an unsuccessful attempt.
