Team India made a surprising call by dropping young star Shubman Gill from the fourth Test against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Australia, after winning the toss, chose to bat first.

Even though Gill wasn’t part of the playing XI, the 25-year-old didn’t let the setback slow him down. During the first session of Day 1, he was spotted hitting the gym at the stadium in a video shared on platform X (formerly Twitter). India’s fielding coach, T. Dilip, joined him for a while to show support.

Why Was Shubman Gill Dropped?

Shubman Gill’s form had been a concern for the team management. They decided to bench him and opt for an extra spinner, Washington Sundar. Earlier in the series, Gill had returned from an injury he sustained during the first Test in Perth. In the Pink Ball Test at Adelaide, he managed scores of 31 and 28, but at Gabba, he could only muster a single run.

Despite these struggles, Gill’s overall performance in 2024 has been solid. He played 12 Tests, scoring 866 runs at an impressive average of 43.30—better than senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

While Gill worked out in the gym, Dhruv Jurel, who had replaced him in the first Test, was busy practicing in the nets. On the Australian side, captain Pat Cummins also worked on his batting skills during practice.

Australia Start Strong Against India On Day 1

Talking about the match, Australia started strong, with debutant Sam Konstas delivering a remarkable half-century in an aggressive style before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed him. Konstas had replaced Nathan McSweeney in the lineup. Usman Khawaja also contributed 57 runs but was sent back to the pavilion by Jasprit Bumrah.
