Shubman Gill Joins MS Dhoni In Elite List After Rise To No.1 ODI Ranking

Shubman Gill on Wednesday (November 8) joined the legendary MS Dhoni in an esteemed list of Indian batters to become the second-fastest to reach the prestigious No.1 tag in ICC rankings for One-Day Internationals.

The rising young prodigy achieved the special numero uno status after enjoying a tremendous run at the top of the order in the last two years and dislodged Pakistan skipper and modern-day batting gem Babar Azam from the top pedestal for the 50-over format.

In the process, Gill also closed in on Dhoni in a rare bracket of Indian men's players to have reached the No.1 status quicker than others. While the great wicketkeeper-batter, who had a spectacular ascent at the international stage back in 2004-2005, reached the top spot in just 38 One-Day innings, Gill missed the mask by a whisker, reaching there in 41 knocks.

Gill's astonishing rise has seen him become the highest run-getter in contemporary ODI cricket since the beginning of 2022. Over the past two years, no batter has come close to his incredible 2,087 runs in 38 innings and an overall 41-match tally of 2,136 runs.

Notably, the magnificent player has stormed past the 2,000-run mark in One-Day Internationals with a terrific average of 61.03 while carrying a spectacular strike-rate of 102.2. Gill's closest second Babar is behind him by a distance of 381 runs in the tally for international batters since January 2022 with a lower average of 56.86 and strike-rate of 86.99.

The mighty talented Indian opener has been dominating attacks and formed a formidable top-order stand with skipper Rohit Sharma ever since replacing ageing veteran Shikhar Dhawan at the turn of the year 2023.

Enjoying great role-clarity and faith provided by the team management, Gill has played with the utmost freedom and hammered 1,449 runs in just 26 innings for the calendar year in ODIs with five centuries, including a memorable maiden double ton against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January.
