Mohammad Nabi notched up a record half-century in match 11 of the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup. Indian Test discard Shreyas Iyer registered yet another batting failure in red-ball cricket, this time against Australia A on Day 3 of their four-day match. In other news, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named a relatively young squad for their three-match T20I series against Nepal.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, September 18.
Mohammad Nabi Slaps Fastest Asia Cup T20 Fifty
Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi rained down 60 runs off just 22 balls against Sri Lanka in match 11 of the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi. Nabi’s knock helped Afghanistan reach a competitive 169-8 from 20 overs. Whacking a 20-ball half-century in the process, Mohammad Nabi also levelled up with Azmatullah Omarzai to record the joint-fastest fifty in the history of T20 Asia Cup, beating Suryakumar Yadav’s record by a couple of deliveries.
Shreyas Iyer Fails Against AUS-A In Fresh Red-Ball Blow
Shreyas Iyer scored just eight against Australia A on Day 3 of the four-day match in Lucknow. Batting at number five, the India A captain was trapped in front by Australian off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli in the 62nd over of the innings. Iyer’s batting setback, coupled with his twin failures in the Duleep Trophy 2025 semifinal earlier this month, further dented his Test prospects. The senior Indian batter last played Test cricket for Team India back in February 2024 during a home series against England.
Jan Frylinck Nearly Breaks Yuvraj Singh Record, Dusts Zimbabwe
Namibia opener Jan Frylinck blasted a 13-ball half-century against Zimbabwe in the third T20I of the three-match series in Bulawayo. The cricketer cracked 77 runs in all from just 31 balls with eight fours and six huge sixes as Namibia mounted a match-winning total of 204-7 upfront.
As it turned out, Jan Frylinck’s 13-ball fifty also helped him smack the joint-third fastest half-century in the history of T20I cricket, falling just behind second-placed Yuvraj Singh. The opening batter also won the ‘Player of the Match’ award as Namibia crushed Zimbabwe by 28 runs to avoid a series whitewash.
Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder To Helm Young WI Squad Vs Nepal
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named a 15-player West Indies squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Nepal, the first ever between the two sides, in the UAE. Much to everybody’s surprise, the West Indies board named spinner Akeal Hosein as stand-in skipper, resting regular captain Shai Hope along with several other senior players citing workload management. With as many as six potential debutants in the team, Akeal Hosein will be joined by a handful of senior pros in the form of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Keacy Carty and Obed McCoy.
Zaheer Khan Steps Down As LSG Mentor
Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has stepped down as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise. According to reports, Khan quit his role from the franchise as his vision did not align with that of head coach and former Australian opener Justin Langer as well as with team owner Sanjeev Goenka. The legendary paceman joined the LSG camp back in August 2024, replacing then mentor Gautam Gambhir. Earlier this year, the LSG franchise finished number seven on the IPL 2025 points table with just six wins and eight defeats from 14 games.
