Shane Warne, Meg Lanning included in the Queen's Birthday Honours List

The late Shane Keith Warne and Meg Lanning have been included in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for 2022 for their contribution to cricket.


Warne, who passed away in March, has been appointed an Order of Australia (AO) for his service to the game as a player, coach, and commentator and his role outside the field.


The spinning wizard, Warne, who had 1,001 international wickets to his name, a 50-over World Cup, multiple Ashes wins, and an IPL title, unfortunately, suffered a heart attack during his stay in Thailand at the age of 52.


Australian Women have won three T20 World Cups under Lanning's captaincy and three Ashes series (2015, 2019, and 2021-22). She is the leading run-scorer in T20Is for Australia.


A statement released by Cricket Australia (CA) read, 


"The late Shane Warne was honoured Officer (AO) of the General Division for distinguished service to cricket as a player, role model and commentator, to the community through charitable initiatives, and for philanthropic contributions,"


"The Queen's Birthday Honours List provides us a chance to recognise and thank some of the incredibly important contributors right across our community. Cricket Australia congratulates everyone that has been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honour List 2022, especially those from across the cricket community,"


Australian women's decorated skipper Lanning has also been awarded Member (AM) of the General Division for her substantial service to female cricket across the years.


Apart from Lanning and Warne, former Test players Doug Walters and Muriel Picton were also honoured as Members (AM) in the General Divison.


Walters played 74 Tests, while Picton, a former Australian skipper, has played just seven matches. 


CA CEO Nick Hockley stated, "We are enormously proud to see Australian women's captain Meg Lanning recognised in today's Honour List,"


"Muriel Picton and Doug Walters both hold a special place in Australian cricket, and we are delighted that they have been recognised today as Members of the General Division." he concluded.
