The Indian team has grabbed a lot of praise after pulling out a brilliant series win against Australia away from home. The visitors were set to chase a target of 328 runs in Brisbane and they did it with three wickets in hands, courtesy some fine and crucial knocks from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.
Gill scored 91 while Pant remained unbeaten at 89 to take India home.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has congratulated India for this “remarkable win”.
"Incredible performance India! Despite so many injuries and setbacks India have pulled off an astonishing series win. Congratulations to Indian team, this series will be remembered for a long time," Afridi tweeted.
India had lost the first match after getting bundled out for 36 in the second innings but levelled the series in the second clash after riding on a superb hundred from stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings and some responsible knocks from Gill.
The third Test ended in a draw but India had suffered some major injury blows till then. Ravindra Jadeja, Hanuma Vihari, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and KL Rahul had been ruled out of the fixtures while Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin weren’t fully fit to be a part of the XI for the decider.
India made few more changes in this line up. Washington Sundar and T. Natarajan were given the Test caps while Shardul Thakur was also included as the third seamer. Mayank Agarwal replaced injured Vihari in the middle order.
The Australian team batted first at the Gabba and posted 369 in the first innings. India in reply were left tottering at 186/6 when Sundar and Thatr joined hands and stitched a record stand of 123 runs for the seventh wicket. Both the players scored individual half-centuries to take India’s total to 336.
The hosts then scored 294 to take a lead of 327 in the second innings. Mohammed Siraj picked up a fifer while Thakur bagged four wickets in the innings. India eventually won the match and the series to go at the helm of the WTC points table.
