Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan has been included in India’s 17-player squad for their second Test match against England. The 26-year-old uncapped Indian cricketer was roped in the national squad alongside Washington Sundar and fellow potential debutant Sourabh Kumar after senior members Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul were ruled out owing to their respective injuries.

Sarfaraz has been banging selection doors for the past couple of years with prolific Ranji Trophy seasons for the Mumbai team. Notably, the Mumbai-based batting prodigy averages a staggering 69.85 in first-class cricket.

Sarfaraz Khan poised for a Test debut against England

Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan and Uttar Pradesh’s spin-bowling all-rounder Saurabh Kumar have been included in India’s 17-member squad for their forthcoming second Test match against the visiting Englishmen. Apart from the two uncapped cricketers, four-Test old Washington Sundar also received a call-up to the Indian team for the all-important match.

During the first Test between India and England at Hyderabad in late-January, Ravindra Jadeja sustained a hamstring injury while KL Rahul complained of a right quadriceps pain. With BCCI medical team monitoring their recovery progress, the two cricketers were excluded from India’s squad for the second Test, thus making way for the domestic-prone trio to join the team in February for the Visakhapatnam affair.

While Sarfaraz Khan and Saurabh Kumar are yet to make their international debuts, Washington Sundar’s call-up marks his return to India’s Test lore in nearly three years. The dazzling all-rounder played the last of his four Test matches for India back in March 2021 against England at Ahmedabad.

Here is a look at India’s updated squad for the second Test against England:

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Avesh Khan, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Washington Sundar and Sourabh Kumar.

The second Test is set to be played between February 2 and February 6 at the iconic Dr. Y. S. Rajashekar Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium at Visakhapatnam.
