Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya will be making a cricketing comeback after serving a two-year ICC ban. Jayasuriya will take up the position of the coach at Melbourne club Mulgrave.
The former left-handed batsman was banned for breaching the ICC anti-corruption code in 2019.
As per a ‘Herald Sun’ report, former all-rounder Dilshan had convinced Jayasuriya for taking up the job.
“Dilshan opened the door for us there, and it was a fantastic opportunity that was presented to us,” said Mulgrave president Malin Pullenayegam.
“We just had to work on it and come to an agreement, and we have. I think it’s a great opportunity for our young guys to know what international cricket standards are,” he said.
“That kind of exposure from a young age just elevates the standard of cricket they’ll be playing,” he added.
Dilshan himself will be a part of the Mulgraves line up along with Upul Tharanga who had hung his boots from international cricket earlier this year.
Jayasuriya was a part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 50-over World Cup and has featured in 445 ODIs and 110 Tests for Sri Lanka.
He scored 6973 runs in Test cricket at an average of over 40 for his side while amassing over 13000 runs in the ODIs. Apart from this, the former skipper was also capped in 31 T20Is scoring 629 runs for the team.
