Cricket Australia (CA) have named all-rounder Mitchell Marsh as Australia's T20I captain for the upcoming South Africa tour. Marsh will replace former captain Aaron Finch, who announced his retirement in February 2023.

Selectors have also called up pacer Spencer Johnson, and all-rounders Aaron Hardie and Matt Short for the short three-T20I series, following their impressive performances in the BBL 2022-23.

Several senior players such as Josh Hazlewood, Patrick Cummins, David Warner, and Mitchell Starc have been rested for the 20-overs series and will join the squad for the ODI-leg.

Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and Travis Head continue to form the core of the T20I squad. National selector George Bailey explained the reason behind Marsh's appointment and also welcomed Short, Spencer, and Hardie into the setup.

Here's what Bailey said

"Mitch has long been a senior player within the white ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at international level. We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa."

"Aaron, Spencer and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future. This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment."

The three-T20I series will start on August 30 and all encounters will be played in Durban.
