Reports: UAE likely to replace Sri Lanka as hosts of Asia Cup 2022

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is fast emerging as the major candidate to host the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup, given the economic mess that original hosts Sri Lanka finds themselves in.

According to a report published in 'The Island', Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) has revealed that their Indian counters, the BCCI, have raised concerns about its ability to host the multi-nation event given the social and financial unrest in the country.

Sri Lanka is facing its worst financial crisis since independence. As a result, the county has run out of essential commodities, and people have taken over the streets to stage their protests against the ruling Rajapaksa government.

"BCCI has raised concerns about civil unrest in the country, and if the tournament is interrupted, we will lose a sum to the tune of US$ six million. However, we indicated that protests around the country against the government have been peaceful. Nevertheless, we are keeping our fingers crossed, said an SLC official to The Island.

Pakistan were originally supposed to host the forthcoming edition in 2020. But, it had to be postponed twice due to the pandemic, with the PCB eventually swapping hosting rights with Lanka. They will host the 2023 event, which will take place in the ODI format.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to host the T20 version of the event between August 27-September 11. However, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that a final decision on the host venue would be taken after the IPL final.

"I had a detailed discussion with the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket on the situation in the country and its impact on cricket. He told ANI that Sri Lanka Cricket is hopeful of delivering a safe and successful Men's Asia Cup.

'The office-bearers of SLC will be hosted at IPL 2022 final on May 29, and we will further assess the situation," the Asian Cricket Council chairman said.

Sri Lanka's loss is likely to be UAE's gain. The Emirates nation has been the biggest beneficiary since the pandemic. Apart from hosting the entire 13th and second half of the 14th season of the IPL, it also played host to the T20 World Cup last October.

A final decision on the same is likely at the end of May or early June.

'There is a lot more cricket left in Pollard': Sunil Narine on Pollard's retirement

On Wednesday, the West Indies limited-overs team captain, Kieron Pollard, announced his retirement from international cricket. He finished with 224 appearances across ODIs and T20Is, with a total of 4275 runs under his belt, including three centuries. Pollard led the West Indies team to a 3-2 series victory against England earlier this year and has undoubtedly ended his career on a high. Talking about Polly's retirement, West Indies and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Sunil Narine reckoned that he would have given so much more to the West Indies cricket in terms of leadership and finishing capabilities. "It's sad, I think he has much more to give to the West Indies, but I think he himself has to know when it's time, and that's what is important," said Narine in a video posted by Trinbago Knight Riders on Instagram. The players feature together for the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Narine has been featuring for TKR since 2016, while the franchise availed the services of Pollard in 2019. Also, the two have represented Trinidad and Tobago for several years together. "I wish him all the best in his future endeavours and whatever tournament he is playing, and I'm sure he will have lots of success. He still has a good fan base, and I hope he enjoys it," Narine added. The wily spinner feels Pollard is loved by many in the West Indies, but he knows about himself the best. The spinner further thinks Pollard will focus on playing more franchise T20 leagues worldwide. "They love to see him play in West Indies, but he knows best. So I think he will focus more on T20 cricket around the world, and I think he enjoys it a lot," the tweaker added. In the last part of the video, Narine is hopeful that it's not the end of Pollard's career and will continue to excite the cricket fans in the coming years. "There is a lot more cricket in Pollard. But, it's not the end, and I am definitely sure that there is more excitement to come," Narine concluded. Over the years, Pollard has proved himself in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with his ball-striking capabilities and has been one of the key performers to help the Mumbai Indians (MI) team clinch trophies on five occasions. However, he has been able to score only 82 runs in six innings of the ongoing edition of IPL.
