The final match of the SMAT 2024 between Mumbai and MP is underway, with Madhya Pradesh posting a remarkable total of 174 runs in 20 overs. After being sent to bat first, MP got off to a strong start despite a shaky beginning. However, an unusual incident occurred at the very last ball of MP's innings when a comical blunder was made by the third umpire.

While on-field umpiring mistakes are quite rare these days, errors by the third umpire are even more rare for the spectators, particularly in a game like the SMAT finals.

Patidar's Protest Rewards MP

In the last ball of MP's innings, Shardul Thakur pitched a yorker just outside the tramline. Patidar danced across, attempting a flick, and missed it. The umpire called it a wide, and Mumbai threw in a DRS appeal. The TV Umpire determined that the ball was within the batter's reach, but surprisingly, it bounced outside the wide tramline. In a twist, the TV Umpire declared it a fair delivery.

Rajat Patidar was visibly unhappy with the decision and stood his ground to re-check the decision. Patidar pointed out where the ball pitched, which was clearly outside the tramline. This prompted the umpires to refer the matter to the TV Umpire once again.

Dramatically enough, the TV Umpire admitted to not checking whether the ball was outside the tramline and then deemed it as a wide delivery. Patidar was happy this time and made good use of the extra ball as he bashed the seventh delivery for a six to end MP's innings.

One Man Army Patidar Carries MP's Innings

As of the thrilling finale, MP batted first but got off to a shaky start, with openers Arpit Gaud and Harsh Gawli underperforming. Captain Rajat Patidar (81 off 40) entered the game after Harpreet Singh Bhatia fell in the 7.4 over. He took charge, and stormed Mumbai bowlers with his blitzkrieg inning.

Venkatesh Iyer and Rahul Batham also struggled to support Patidar, who carried MP's innings on his shoulders. After setting a target of 174 runs, the stage is now set for the Mumbai batters to showcase their skills as both teams compete for the title in the SMAT 2024 finale.
