Ranji Trophy 2022: Minister Manoj Tiwary included in Bengal's squad

Bengal has included Manoj Tiwary, a sitting minister, into the Ranji Trophy squad for the upcoming season. Tiwary is West Bengal’s Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports.

“I have built a core team that will do the job in my absence in my constituency. My team has the (local Trinamool Congress) block president, women’s wing head, members of our students wing and other experienced political leaders and our work force. So far, we haven’t faced any problem. We have been able to provide services at my constituency,” Tiwary told The Indian Express.

The right-handed batter won from the Shibpur constituency in Howrah in the last Bengal Assembly elections while contesting for Trinamool Congress.

“I never thought about quitting cricket and I discussed it with our chief minister. She told me, ‘No problem, khel na (keep playing)’. This is my profession and passion, which is the reason I didn’t announce my retirement. Whatever I’m today is because of my cricket,” Tiwary said.

Bengal will begin the campaign against Tripura on January 13, 2022.

Despite heroic bowling performance from Shardul Thakur, who take a magnificent seven-wicket haul, South Africa managed to go past the first innings total of India and secure a lead of 27 runs on the second day of the second Test in Johannesburg. South Africa would not be too disappointed at getting bowled out for a mere 229 but they would certainly rue the set batsmen such as Petersen and Bavuma not converting their starts into big scores and instead throwing their wickets away. South Africa are 0-1 behind in the three-match long series and they would hope the bowling attack will put the Indian batting line up under pressure in response to a 27-run lead.

Riding on some good show from the bowlers, the Perth Scorchers clinched a 10-run win over Sydney Sixers in Queensland on Tuesday. Chasing a 144 in 20 overs, the Sydney side lost early wickets and were left tottering at 67/6. But it was Daniel Christian who tried to hold the fort from one end and struck a 73 off 61 deliveries which included four maximums and five fours during the course. But Christian’s departure in the 19th over when the team score read 124/7 pushed the Sixers on the back foot. They eventually ended up scoring 133/8 in 20 overs. For Scorchers, it was Andrew Tye who was the pick of the bowlers after he returned with figures of 3/17 in 4 overs. Apart from Tye, Tymal Mills also scalped a three-wicket haul for 29 runs in 4 overs while Lance Morris two wickets to his name for 25 runs in his 4 overs. Earlier, in the day, the Scorchers lost an early wicket but Kurtis Patterson and Munro steadied the ship with a partnership of 47 runs for the second wicket before Patterson was sent back in the hut for a 25-ball 27. The Perth side then began to lose wickets at regular intervals and were 69/5 when once again Agar and Aaron Hardie provided the resistance and stitched a stand of 49 runs for the sixth wicket. Hardie struck 45 in 24 deliveries while Agar chipped in with 29 off 20 as Perth Scorchers managed to put 143/8 in 20 overs. Hayden Kerr returned with 4/32 in 4 overs for his side.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy suffers injury, ruled out of remainder of New Zealand tour

Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy has been ruled out of the second and final Test of the series on the tour of New Zealand due to a finger injury. He has suffered a cut in his right hand that will require stitches and he won’t be able to make it into the playing XI for the second Test. "Mahmudul got a cut injury on his right hand in between third and fourth finger while fielding and he required three stitches. He will be under observation for seven to ten days. We are providing him all the medication that is required,” BCB physio Bayzidul Islam said. Joy was the chief architect of a strong batting performance by Bangladesh in the first innings of the ongoing Test match in Mount Maunganui. He batted with impeccable patience and scored a valuable 78 runs that laid the foundation for a mammoth 458 in the first innings and paved the way for a lead of 130 runs. Joy made his debut towards the end of the last year against Pakistan and had a disastrous start to his Test career. However, he has turned his fortunes around with a solid performance against New Zealand.

Former Saurashtra player Ambapratasinh Jadeja dies of Covid-19 infection at 69

Former Saurashtra cricketer Ambapratasinhji Jadeja has passed away due to Covid-19 infection at the age of 69, the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) said. “Everyone at Saurashtra Cricket Association are deeply saddened on the sad demise of Saurashtra’s yesteryears’ cricketer late Shri Ambapratapsinhji Jadeja,” the SCA said in a media statement issued in Rajkot. “He passed away today early morning at Valsad fighting hard battle against Covid-19,” the statement added. Ambapratasinhji Jadeja who hailed from Jamnagar was a retired DSP, Gujarat Police and played eight Ranji Trophy matches for Saurashtra. In a condolence message, former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said, “Ambapratapsinhji was a remarkable player and I have interacted good cricketing moments with him. May his noble soul rest in the shelter of the Almighty.”
