Former England captain Joe Root has opted himself out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Earlier this year, the cricketer made his IPL debut through the Rajasthan Royals franchise.

Root announced his decision prior to the IPL 2024 retention deadline and a few weeks ahead of the forthcoming auction event in the UAE.

England international Joe Root will not be continuing his association with the Rajasthan Royals franchise. In his maiden IPL outing earlier this year, the cricketer found himself in the Royals playing XI on three occasions and served the franchise as one of the senior-most members of the side alongside fellow Englishman Jos Buttler and team captain Sanju Samson.

Speaking on Root’s sudden exit, Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara said:

“Joe Root informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024. Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him.”

Prior to his inclusion in the Rajasthan Royals camp for IPL 2023, the batting veteran had applied himself at the auctions a number of times during his career.

Root was last seen in action at the 2023 World Cup in India, where his team (England) became one of the earliest sides to crash out of the semifinal race despite holding a defending champions tag.

The cricketer himself endured a lean run with the bat, returning with just 276 runs from nine innings at an average of a below-par 30.66. Root also failed to make any impact during his three-match IPL 2023 run for the Royals.
