Prithvi Shaw breaks 144-year-old first-class record, puts Mumbai on top

Mumbai captain Prithvi Shaw piled on Uttar Pradesh’s pain on Day 3 of the second Ranji Trophy 2022 semi-final in Bengaluru. The opening batter flayed the UP attack by punching 64 runs at the top of the order.

In doing so, the batting prodigy broke a 144-year-old first-class record. Here is a detailed report on the astonishing feat the sparkling young talent achieved.

Ranji Trophy 2022 semi-final: Shaw belts 64 in a 66-run opening stand

Prithvi Shaw compiled a rapid 64 in a 66-run opening stand with first-innings centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal. In doing so, the talented stroke maker tendered his opening partner as a mere spectator for the first couple of hours in Mumbai’s second innings.

Notably, the Mumbai skipper now holds an elite batting distinction among openers in first-class cricketing history.

Shaw contributed 96.96% of runs in his 66-run opening partnership with Jaiswal. It’s now the highest contribution of runs by a single batsman in any 50-plus opening partnership in first-class cricket.

Previously, the record was held by Australia’s Percy McDonnell. The late cricketer amounted to 95.34% of runs (82 runs) as an opener in an 86-run first-wicket stand with Alec Bannerman against the North in a tour game of 1888.

Ranji Trophy 2022 semi-final Mumbai vs Uttar Pradesh update:

Shaw’s 64 extended Mumbai’s lead to 346 runs by stumps on Day 3. Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh line-up was shot out for 180. Opener Jaiswal (35*) and number 3 batter Armaan Jaffer (32*) will resume proceedings for the Ranji giants on Day 4 today.
