PCB planning to approach ICC for hosting six events

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to submit expressions of interest to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for six events between 2024 and 2031 after the Board of Governors had a virtual meeting.

The board wants to host the 2025 and 2029 editions of the Champions Trophy on its own and are looking to host the World T20 in 2026 and 2028 and the 50-over World Cup in 2027 and 2031 in collaboration with the other Asian nations.

"The ICC's evaluation committee will now examine and evaluate the PCB as well as other members' expression of interests and revert with their decision, before the second phase of the event hosting process begins in September," the board said in a statement.

"The PCB remains hopeful that it will earn hosting rights of, at least, one event, which, in turn, will act as a great boost to Pakistan, which last staged an ICC event in 1996."

The ICC last month laid out a plan for the next cycle where eight global tournaments are scheduled to take place. The 50-over World Cup will comprise 14 teams while the World T20 will have 20 teams battling it out in the competition.

The ICC had also stated that the hosts for the men’s events will be decided in September.

RCB name Prathmesh Mishra as new chairman

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has named Prathamesh Mishra as the new Chairman of the franchise ahead of the resumption of IPL 2021. Mishra took over the reins from Anand Kripalu who ended his tenure as Managing Director & CEO of Diageo India on June 30, 2021. Mishra who currently holds the position of the Chief Commercial Officer of Diageo India took over this additional duty on July 1, 2021. Prathmesh expressed his delight at taking up the new role. “Royal Challengers Bangalore is an integral part of Diageo India, and all of us share a profound passion for the team. I am excited about adding my shoulder to Virat Kohli, Mike Hesson and Simon Katich and playing bold in everything we do, on and off, the field. I would also like to thank Anand for his tremendous contribution to RCB,” he said. The IPL 2021 will resume in September in the UAE. It was earlier suspended after there was a rise in Covid-19 cases within the franchise teams. RCB looked in some good form before the cash-rich league was put to halt and were placed at number three in the points table with 5 wins from seven matches.

Tom Banton called-up for third ODI against Sri Lanka

England have included Tom Banton in the squad for the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka. Banton has come up as a backup for Dawid Malan who is absent due to personal reasons. The third ODI between the two teams is slated to take place on July 4 in Bristol. Banton has so far featured in 6 ODIs for England and has managed to score 134 runs including a half-century. He recently scored an unbeaten ton against Kent for Somerset during the T20 Blast. He last played an ODI for England in 2020 against Ireland in Southampton. Somerset confirmed that Banton had been called-up to join the England squad and will be missing the upcoming fixtures of T20 Blast including the game against Gloucestershire on Thursday evening. The home side are currently leading the three-match series 1-0 with the second clash slated to take place on Thursday (July 1, 2021). The England bowlers rattled the Sri Lankan batting line up and bundled them out for 185 and then rode on Joe Root’s half-century to go over the line by 5 wickets in the 35th over at Chester-le-Street. The Eoin Morgan-team earlier thumped the Lankan lions 3-0 in the T20I series.

Lord's to have 100 percent attendance during 2nd ODI between England & Pakistan

The second ODI between England and Pakistan scheduled to take place at Lord’s will have 100 per cent attendance. "We have been in consultation with Public Health England and our local Safety Advisory Group on the arrangements for the match and we are pleased to confirm that we have been granted permission to operate at 100 percent seating capacity for this match," read an official statement on the website of the Lord’s Cricket ground. There are certain guidelines for the spectators as well. If the ticket holders are aged 11 or above, they will be required to have proof of a negative LFD, proof of full vaccination and proof of natural immunity. Social distance won’t be required while on the ground but the masks are required when moving in the ground, for instance while using bars and food outlets. Earlier, as a part of the UK government’s Events Research Programme, Edgbaston had also allowed 80 per cent attendance during the third ODI between England and Pakistan. "It's fantastic for sport in the West Midlands that so many cricket fans will be able to enjoy another blockbuster fixture in England versus Pakistan at Edgbaston," said Chief Executive of Warwickshire cricket Stuart Cain. The two teams are slated to play a three-match ODI series and as many T20Is. The ODI series begins on July 8 in Cardiff.

England Test captain Joe Root has opened up about the ‘rest and rotation’ policy and has said that it should be ‘put behind us’. “We are coming into a period of time now where rest and rotation is put behind us,” Root was quoted as saying by ‘ESPNcricinfo’. “Hopefully, if everyone is fit, we are going to have our best team available for what is to follow. That’s really exciting and something I’m very much looking forward to.” Root further added that the side is slated to play ten matches against two of the finest oppositions and it is a great opportunity for the team to play some strong cricket. “We have ten very hard Test matches against two brilliant opposition coming up but it is a great opportunity for us to play some strong cricket and if everyone is fit and available we will have a good team ourselves.” England are scheduled to play a five-match Test series against India at home and travel to Australia in December for the Ashes series. The right-handed batsman has also said that the Test series against India would be a preparation for the Ashes. “I’d like to think that, over the next five Test matches, we’ll be trying to play our strongest side or have our strongest squad available for those games. This is, I suppose, what you do it for: to ready yourself for this lead-in and for in particular that Ashes,” Root said.
