PCB Chairman Opens Up On Babar Azam’s Future As PAK Captain After T20 WC Humiliation

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi has opened up about the captaincy future of senior batter Babar Azam. Under Babar’s leadership, the Pakistan cricket team crashed to a first-round exit from the recently-concluded 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA.

The 29-year-old was reinstated as Pakistan’s white-ball captain earlier this year after Shaheen Afridi’s troops crumbled to a 1-4 series defeat in New Zealand. 

Ever since Babar’s return to captaincy, the ‘Men in Green’ failed to defeat New Zealand at home in April, lost one of the T20Is in Ireland, lost a series in England and subsequently agonized humiliating defeats to USA and arch-rivals India at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

PCB chairman breaks silence on Babar Azam

While speaking with the reports, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that the board is yet to make a call on Babar Azam’s future as Pakistan captain.

However, Mohsin stated that he is seeking advice from a number of former Pakistan cricketers, and he has also consulted with Pakistan’s newly-appointed head coach Gary Kirsten regarding the matter.

The PCB chairman maintained that “mistakes were made” by the Pakistan team under Babar Azam’s guidance, and there is going to be a “post-mortem” in the central contracts of the players. Moreover, the Pakistani politician added that players will also have to give fitness tests going forward.

Following a disappointing show at the 2024 T20 World Cup in USA, the Pakistan team will soon by hosting Bangladesh for a two-match Test series in August. The Test matches will also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
